Abstract
This study is from the perspective of the place-based psychology and aims at understanding the links of Korean-Americans sense of place and their preferred activities in North Korea.
This study on the sense of place is from the perspective of men-centered geography. It pays attention to individuals experience-based feelings and how they interact with places. In recent years, a great number of researches on the sense of place were done in various academic areas. In addition, due to discussions saying the sense of place is closely linked to regional and community planning and developments, the sense of place emerged a topic of great significance. The sense of place falls into a question of emotional realm constituting a driving force for regional development and a required element for inviting investment.
This study took note on the distinctive characteristics of North Korea as a place and on that Korean-American plays important role in extending humanitarian assistances to North Korea. North Korea represents heterotopia, or a mixed place as being a closed dictatorship, at the same time, sharing the 5000 years of history of the Korean peninsula with South Korea. It is a rare place that depending on viewpoints people may have extremely varying sense of it, and changes in their sense of place are distinctively shown according to their experiences in North Korea. Korean-Americans are working hard to help North Korea. They contributed to the establishment of Pyongyang General Hospital, Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, actively engaged in human rights movement in North Korea, and preparing to propose the North Korea Orphans Adoption Law to the Congress.
This study is to explain what are the characteristics of the sense of place of the Korean Americans, how they are linked to their activities from the perspective of place-based psychology in view of the cognitive behaviorism. Korean-Americans thoughts and humanitarian activities toward North Korea are derived from their topophilia, Christian philanthropic spirit, and love of homeland, and they can be explained in the context of identity changes that occurred from homeland to a foreign country immigration. What worth a careful attention is that their activities vary according to their sense of place. Detailed researches on the Korean-Americans sense of place toward North Korea and their varying degrees of psychological attachment to North Korea reveal the followings:
First, the Koreans immigrated to the US mostly experience identity changes. Generally, they go through three stages
initial adaptation period, middle adaptation period, and full adaptation period. At first, they miss Korea and have fear of America. Over time, through reorganization of memories and increased place familiarity they accept America as their second home and come to have a fear of going back to Korea fearing reverse cultural shock. The longer they stay in USA
they seem to have more strengthened view of seeing North Korea as part of entire Korea.
Second, Korean Americans are found to have a perception of North Korea as a closed society where political leader cult is practiced, Pyongyang as a display city. They have Christian nostalgia toward it as a place where Christianity was first introduced to. The dual sense of place of topophilia and topophobia is also found among them in addition to a contradictory feeling over North Koreas heterotopic placeness as being a historical place of the Korean peninsula on the one hand and a closed place on the other. They also have an overlapping view of North Korea seeing it as part of themselves or a distant stranger.
Third, the sense of place toward North Korea is divided into four categories based on Korean Americans viewpoint of North Korea
ethnic topophilia, ethnic topophobia, other topophilia, other topophobia. Their sense of place seems similar to that of South Koreans and it is believed that the sense of place is formed from their visits to North Korea that would have been possible because they have an access to it.
Fourth, their sense of place toward North Korea changes according to their fixed perception and priming. Negative perception toward man-made landscapes reflecting North Korean ideology is found to be stronger than toward natural beauties. The fixed perception toward North Korea is found to be more complicated and multi-layered feelings than just an increase of negative feelings. Priming is found effective in leading the Korean Americans mixed feelings of places in North Korea to a certain direction. As to the Geumgang mountain tour, their responses regardless of what category sense of place they may belong showed no big difference before and after 'it- is- North Korea information was given. It is believed due to their perception of the mountain as a primary place of Korea. As to the Arirang performance, a man-made perfomance expressing North Koreas sense of value and ideology, priming resulted in big changes in peoples attitude. The biggest change is shown for Yeongbyeon, a place of extreme mixtures in the sense of place as being the hometown of the beloved Korean poet Kim So-Wol and the site of nuclear weapon experiment.
Fifth, this study tried to explain the NGO activities in view of their sense of place and intense experiences in North Korea. It is found that the ethnic topophilia group concentrates on various exchange programs and official aid activities geared to unification, while the other topophilia group is more for international aids and USA-North Korea exchanges seeing North Korea as a less-developed country or a country of extreme poverty, the ethnic topophobia group helping North Korean defectors and non-official aids activities, and the other topophobia group indifferent, sympathize with the hawkish attitude of the mainstream Americans supporting putting pressure on North Korea. The four groups activities overlap at times and continuously change.
In conclusion, Korean American activities active in helping North Korea are found to have a primary place understanding toward North Korea, which is derived from their religious belief, philanthropic love of their homeland transcending self-interest braving even physical dangers. Their activities can be explained through place-based psychology working deep in their hearts.
The significance of this paper is that it is a verification–based research explaining the links between the sense of place and behavioral patterns of the Korean Americans from the perspective of place-based psychology. It also provides clues to the solution to south-south conflicts, south-north and north-north conflicts through understandings of how ones sense of place affects their varied aids activities toward North Korea. This paper is believed to offer a rough sketch for creating a synergy effect through networking with Korean Americans in the course of the unification of Korea.
It is generally said that North Korean regime and North Korean people should be considered two separate issues. That is, while keeping a watchful eye on the dictatorship of the North and nuclear weapon issue, humanitarian aids for North Korean people suffering hunger and human rights violations should continue. This raises the needs for understanding North Korea as a multifaceted place of natural landscape, human landscape, closed space, and historical place. This understanding will help recognizing the cold space of North Korea as a place where various meaningful activities are taking place reflecting their sense of place.
