Abstract

This dissertation research is to propose a new conception of respect alternative to the three dominant conceptions of respect, such as appraisal respect, respect for equal rights, and difference-recognition, in the plural democratic society.
Firstly, being a classical notion of respect rooted in the hierarchical estate society, respect as merit-based appraisal is based on ones social status or merits. In this perspective, the more merits individuals achieve, the more respect they obtain. However, justifying an unequal treatment between high and low achievers, this conception of respect legitimizes the reinforcement of pre-exiting social inequality. It thus fails to provide any theoretical grounds, on which individuals in different social, cultural, and economical status demand equal respect to one other.
Secondly, the conception of respect for equal rights––that emerged in the liberal tradition––views that everyone is entitled to equal basic rights, regardless of social and economic inequality and difference. This conception better serves the ideal of pluralism than the first one does, because it treats everyone as an equal and autonomous being on the basis of universal human dignity.
This rights-based respect, nonetheless, does not consider the differences of identity––or, cultural differences––as an object of respect. This conception suggests tolerance for difference as a way of respect
however, strictly speaking, the notion of tolerance does not respect differences, but rather disregard them. Tolerance inherently assumes a power imbalance between the tolerator and the tolerated, in which the former is considered to superior to the latter. Put differently, tolerance for differences allows implicit disrespect for differences, as it fails to regard an object of toleration as an equal being.
Thirdly, the conception of respect as difference-recognition is discussed as an alternative to the conception of respect as respect for rights. Based on various disciplines spanning multiculturalism, politics of identity, and politics of difference, and more, this conception of respect suggests that differences be recognized assertively, beyond toleration.
The conception of respect as difference-recognition recognizes differences by an evaluation of the value of differences abide by social standards. In this regard, this conception follows the logic of the conception of respect as appraisal, which allows disrespect for the differences according to ones achievement. Moreover, this conception of respect does not offer a practical way of mutual respect across different groups from diverse backgrounds, beyond simple endowment of the collective rights of cultural protection for minority groups.
In sum, the three conceptions of respect discussed above failed to provide a legitimate way of respecting diversity tied with social and economic inequality and difference, in a pluralistic society.
Therefore, I suggest the conception of respect as recognition of existence as a new conception of respect that best suits the ideal of pluralistic democracy. While this conception of respect perceives a person as a being of complex identity and ones own narrative, respect means to accept them as they are. The extent of respect one deserves is not determined by an evaluation of the value of differences. This conception offers a significant principle for an institutional change that realizes democratic ideal in a pluralistic society: the guarantee of rights for minority groups not only to express publicly demand for recognition of difference without any fear, but to participate in the democratic negotiation procedure to accommodate and recognize their demand.
Lastly I propose attentive listening to others voices and narratives with empathy for practical method of respect as recognition of existence in ordinary lives. These theoretical and practical foundations can contribute to the fulfillment of mutual respect beyond inequality and difference in a pluralistic society.
