표지 장식의 역사에 기반한 장식적 디자인 연구

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 책의 표제지와 표지 장식의 역사를 추적함으로써 시대별 장식이 가졌던 시각적 특성 및 의미를 찾고, 오늘날 '양식으로서의 장식'이 소멸된 근거를 밝혀 그 연장선 상에서 오늘날의 시대적 상황에 맞는 장식적 디자인 작품을 연구하고자 하였다. 르네상스의 장식은 신으로부터 인간을 독립시키기 위하여 사람들 또는 인간을 은유하는 자연을 모티프로 한 테두리 장식이 발달하였다. 이러한 표제지의 장식은 산업혁명 이후 책 시장이 활성화되면서 그 의미가 크게 변화한다. 과거의 표제지는 주로 필경사와 인쇄가의 자기 표현의 기제가 되었으나 산업혁명 이후의 표지는 판매대 앞에 선 대중에게 책의 내용물을 신속하고 투명하게 보여주기 위하여 사람과 책의 본문을 연결하는 스크린이자 인터페이스가 되었다. 과거의 '양식으로서의' 장식은 책의 내용에 대해서는 아무것도 보여줄 수 없었기에 19세기 중반을 기하여 사라지기 시작했으며, 상대적으로 투명하게 압축적으로 내용을 보여줄 수 있었던 사진과 그림이 장식을 대체하기 시작하였다. 논문에서는 대중의 미적 취향이 바뀌었다는 미학적 견지보다는 투명성의 논리에서 장식의 소멸 근거를 탐색하였다. 르네상스인들이 신으로부터 인간을 구원하였다면, 오늘날 현대인은 자신들이 만들어 낸 합리적 이성의 도구들로부터 다시 인간적 의미를 되새겨야 할 필요가 있다. 이에 논문에서는 장식적 디자인을 그 대안으로 제시하였다. 먼저 거장의 고전적 목판 장식을 디지털로 매개하고, 플러런으로 구성된 디지털 폰트를 조합하여 새로운 활자체를 디자인하였으며, 학문의 다이어그램에 사용된 이성적 심볼들을 활용하여 장식적인 표제지를 디자인하는 작품 연구의 과정을 통해서 장식적인 요소와 구조적인 요소를 동시에 내포할 수 있는 오늘날의 장식적 디자인을 모색하였다.

I have researched a history of title page decoration to find out the reason that decorations disappeared. And by analysing the result, I have designed decorative works that is suitable for these days' environmental situation and humane meaning. In the renaissance era, crafters and printers used arabesque motiff to decorate title-page. Natural object in decoration used as a metaphor of human being because people want to be independent from god in the era. These meaning of decoration definitely started to change after 19th century. Traditional title-page decorations mainly used as a media to express a printers' identity and emotional feeling. But after industrial revolution in the 19th century, title-page used as an interface that connects the author of a book and customers stand over bookstands. Because 'Traditional decorations as a style' can show nothing related to the contents inside of a book, they started to disappear after midtime of 19th century. Relatively images and illustrations had started to replace the role of decorations in title-page because they had more trasparency than decorative ornaments. The reason that extinction of decorations in title-page is not at the aestetic low but at the less tranparency of decoration. Today we have to revive the humane meaning from rational artificial devices as renaissance men decorated title-page. Many statistical data about smart device addiction shows that they are no more human centered. So I have desgined decorative work as a solution that can show humane meaning. First, I have re-mediated works of mater-piece in renaissance era. Second, I have designed typeface which is combinaton of fleuron fonts. Third, I have used scientific symbols as decorative ornaments to design poster. These scientific symbols origianlly used in diagrams show possibility as design elements. Finally I designed some title-pages of various studies using suitable symbols as decorative elements. Throughout these decorative works, I have tried to combine functional and decorative elements of design.
