Abstract
For the rational use of wood which is a representatively hygroscopic porous material, moisture control of wood and its analysis are essential. Moisture in wood is the most important factor to change physical-mechanical properties such as density, dimension, strength, optical, electrical and acoustic properties. Many researchers who analyzed the interaction between wood and water reported that the hydroxyl groups in cell wall play a great role during adsorption-desorption processes. However, water adsorption-desorption processes interpretation at molecular level have not been clearly demonstrated because of lack of effective analytical techniques.
In this study, Buijs-Choppin theory, which is developed based on liquid water mixture model and near infrared spectroscopy technique, was applied to interpret the state of water in wood. After acquiring difference spectra from raw absorbance spectra of yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), water absorption band in a range bewtwwe 1800 nm and 2100 nm was extracted by linear baseline correction. Principal component analysis was performed to the water absorption band ranging from 1800 nm to 2100 nm. In a spectral loading plot of second principal component, three distinct wavelengths (1868 nm, 1930 nm, 2021 nm) were observed. Those wavelengths, which were corresponded to S0, S1 and S2 depending on hydrogen bond orders respectively, were applied to curve fitting.
S0 component, which is monomolecularly adsorbed water and a top mono water molecule of polymolecularly adsorbed water, showed similar tendency of areal intensity (AI) change in both adsorption and desorption processes. It was concluded that the monomolecularly sorption was completed around 8% moisture content (MC) because maximum values of AI were discovered at that MC in adsorption-desorption processes. There was same tendency of AI of S0 component from 2% to 14% MC in adsorption-desorption processes
After reaching 8% MC in adsorption-desorption processes, the AI of was decreased. It was concluded that the cause of AI decrement was making additional hydrogen bonds with near water molecules in adsorption process and breaking hydrogen bonds on sorption site in desorption process. In forced condensation state, AI of was decreased with increment of MC. It was supposed that the lager liquid diameter in lumen, the less ratio of S0 component.
S1 component, which is polymolecularly adsorbed water, gradually increased until 90% relative humidity (RH) then rapidly increased until 99% RH in adsorption process. The rapid increment was interpreted as the top of polymolecularly adsorbed water molecules made additional hydrogen bonds with polymolecularly adsorbed water layer grown from adjacent cell wall after 90% RH. However, AI of S1 component increased from 99% to 80% RH in desorption process. It was interpreted as the water molecules hydrogen bonded with S2 component were converted to S1 or S0 component with desorption of S2 component. There was no difference of AI change tendency in a MC range from 2% to 11% MC during adsorption-desorption processes. However, there was inverse tendency after 14% MC in each adsorption-desorption processes. In forced condensation state, it was supposed that the cause of AI of S1 component decrement with increment of MC was similar to that of S0
S2 component which is polymolecularly adsorbed water engaged in hydrogen bonding with adjacent water molecules in polymolecularly adsorbed water layer. AI of S2 component rapidly increased from 60% to 90% RH in adsorption process. On the other hand, AI of S2 component decreased more rapidly than adsorption process from 95% to 60% in desorption process. It was therefore that the hydrogen bonding with adjacent water molecules in polymolecularly adsorbed water layer varied susceptibly between 60% to 95% RH. Between 2% and 10% RH, there were no hydrogen bondings with adjacent water molecules because AI of S2 component was approximately 0 in both adsorption and desorption processes. There was hysteresis between adsorption and desorption processes from 10% to 21% MC. It was concluded that S2 component highly affected hysteresis of wood during adsorption -desorption processes. As a result, the different adsorption-desorption rates of water molecules engaged in lots of hydrogen bondings induced hysteresis phenomenon. In forced condensation state, AI of S2 component was increased with increment of MC.
In this study, water adsorption-desorption processes in wood were analyzed by near infrared spectroscopy at molecular level. It is expected that the result of this study would be a basic database for following studies related to water in wood. It is also expected that the result of this study would be applied to studies on MC prediction model development using near infrared spectroscopy considering variations of water absorption bands for enhancing the validation result.
