Vlogging South Korea: An Analysis on the Emergence of Citizen Diplomacy in Social Media

Abstract

본 논문은 한국에서 특정 콘텐츠를 가지고 동영상 블로깅 활동을 하는 유투브 인사들의 사례를 분석하여 소셜미디어를 통한 시민외교의 등장을 살피고자 한다. 본 연구는 동영상 블로깅의 발전은 시민외교가 하나의 외교 관행으로써 이해됨과 동시에, 소셜미디어의 조건과 한국의 문화적 자원을 모두 적극 활용함으로써 가능했다는 것을 밝힌다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 기초이론, 심층인터뷰, 대중매체 기사와 관련 출판자료 등 다양한 연구자료를 활용한다. 위 수집 자료에 근거, 본 논문은 한국의 동영상 블로깅에 세 가지 주요 발전이 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 무엇보다 이러한 세 가지 발전을 분류하고 설명하는 데 있어 결정적 계기가 되는 유튜브와 한국 문화 역사상의 특정 한 시점을 이해하는 것이 중요하다. 이 때, 세 가지 분류는 유튜브 파트너 프로그램의 본질 및 프로그램의 장기적인 변화 양상, 동영상 블로거의 활동을 촉진하는 프로그램의 매력, 그리고 블로거의 사용자 생성 콘텐츠의 종류를 포함한다. 본 연구는 이러한 발전 양상과 시민외교의 정의를 고려, 동영상 블로깅이 시민외교의 한 축에 해당한다는 것을 밝히고자 한다. 나아가 본 연구는 시민외교의 의미를 재조명하고 이에 대한 이해를 도움으로써 학자와 외교 실무자 및 일반대중에 함의하는 바가 클 것으로 기대된다.

This thesis will analyze the emergence of citizen diplomacy in social media by looking on the video blogging activities of several YouTube personalities with specific contents on South Korea. As a theory that reflects the real life situation on the subject of diplomacy, the current discussion on diplomacy still tries to create a consensus of citizen diplomacy, as a new variant of diplomacy activities. This thesis will present the evolution of vlogging as citizen diplomacy and provide the reasons behind the emergence of citizen diplomacy in social media. By looking on the evolution of vlogging as citizen diplomacy in social media, changes on chartacteristics of the actrions can be explained and by looking on the timeline analysis on the reasons can be pulled out. Analyzing the reason of individuals vlogging is important to support the justification of vlogging as one type of citizen diplomacy activities by explaining actors interest in citizen diplomacy. For doing so, this study will use grounded theory as methodology and will use in-depth interviews, articles in media, as well as publications that are relevant with the study as the sources of the study. Hoping to give tmeaning and understanding on citizen diplomacy, this thesis will be useful both for academia and practitioners of diplomacy, as well as general public.
