미국 신보수주의의 사상적 배경

Abstract

현재 부시 행정부에 큰 영향을 미치는 신보수주의 정치세력의 이념은 하나의

일관된 틀을 가지는 것이 아니라 여러 가지 사상적 뿌리들이 얽혀 있다. 이 논

문은 여러 가지 사상적 뿌리 중 신보수주의에 가장 큰 영향을 미친 레오 스트라

우스(Leo Strauss)를 집중적으로 분석하고자 한다. 이 글은 스트라우스의 이

념적 특징과 정치적 함의를 엘리트주의, 절대적 도덕관, 공포와 힘, 시민적 덕

성과 종교의 중요성 등 4가지로 정리하고자 한다. 이때 이 논문은 스트라우스

의 이념을 단순히 소개하기보다는 스트라우스주의가 어떻게 현 부시 행정부의

정치에 수렴되는지를 주목하고자 한다.

Neo-conservatism has its roots in various ideological trends. Among these ideological

roots, this article specifically focuses on Leo Strauss, who has been playing a major role in

shaping Neo-conservative minds. In this article, I will seek to extract following four

characteristics of Neo-conservative ideology and its political implications; (1) Elitism; (2)

Absolute moralism; (3) Fear and power; (4) Civic virtue and Religion. This article is less

concerned in summarizing its main themes than demonstrating its political implication to

current Bush administration.
