Abstract

The world is largely composed of two elements, life and a person who lives in it. People have to endure and survive through endless conflicts and struggles life throws at them. From this perspective, when I try to understand the world around me, I approach metaphorically rather than logically. It is because life is completely inconsequential and, therefore, often it is seemingly out of order and chaotic. I believe that the thing individual is able to do is observation toward life without evasion due to incomprehensible of the world.

My artistic way of putting a personal story into real time-based installation began with the project called . This piece is based on my frightening experience of anonymous visitor knocking on my door at night. During the exhibition, my room is being broadcasted live by using a video camera by the window of exhibition space, challenging the notion of private and public, surveillance and control. I prefer to work with a moment when personal experience is faced with problem, which is difficult to resolve and brings frustration.

As contemporary art reflects the diversity of the life and issues around today, due to all of its complexities, it often represents reality in refracted view, which seems confusing. However, the way contemporary art deals with various life as subject matter is similar to decoding process. Therefore, when I follow the artistic perspective to observe the world, I end up with different vision of the life. This is the part I think art has influence toward life. Through artistic way, there is chance to understand the blind spot of the world which is not in order of logic or rationality. Hope is the thing I chase in attempt to light up anonymous area of the world and affirm life. Since chasing hope through art work, I focus on how it works rather than what it is. From this perspective, my work draws ordinary scene into installation in order to decode and visualize hope from it.

My intention is to capture 'hope' from ordinary life and to trace it possibly with new language of art. It is based on the complexity of contemporary art in which reflects the reality and society, and at the same time respects individuality. Due to this concept, I believe in precision of art, and through the attempts to find the shape of hope, I want to face life by going through the process of chasing hope and losing it again.
