- Abstract
- This research aims to understand the early study abroad phenomenon between the South Korea and China. It also shows the changing of the number of students who studied abroad early and factors that may has caused this changes. The number of the students who early studied abroad in the South Korea had been increasing since 1997, however in 2006, it came to a turning point. Until now, it continues to decrease. The research demonstrates that there is a tight connection between the early study abroad phenomenon and inherent educational system. On top of that, the excessive costs of private education have a crucial influence on this phenomenon. Besides those internal causes, there are also other reasons that have contributed to the increase in students studying abroad. South Korean society is convinced with the importance of English and strongly believe that someone with the foreign degree could get a good job. However, it in fact became very difficult for students who held good foreign degree from the USA or the Europe to find a job since 2006. Moreover, in year 2006, international schools were slowly emerging in South Korea, it then provides new choices for parents. Thus, causing the number of early study abroad students to decrease.
On the contrary, the number of Chinese early study abroad students are still increasing. The growth of economic and the educational system accelerate the phenomenon of early study abroad. Also, opening study-abroad policy and advanced education methods in the foreign country have a big effect on this phenomenon. This research utilizes the push and pull theory to explain the reasons of early study abroad and made some new frameworks to account this more carefully.
