Abstract
Objective- Measuring tooth wear is useful in many different fields. There have been needs to measure the rate, degree, patterns of tooth wear for clinical purpose and research. There have been many suggestions for development of tooth wear index, and measuring technique. Inter-examiner concordances in the progression of tooth wear evaluation were tested in some of researches, but new indices suggested in new researches does not allow for ready comparison of results to define prevalence of condition for epidemiologic purpose.
And many different techniques to measure tooth wear have been developed but comparison between these techniques is not enough.
Purpose of this article is to review suggested indices and identify separate indices with their purpose, criteria, and this could be helpful for clinicians and researchers with choice of tooth wear evaluating method.
Methods-80 literatures which suggested tooth wear indices, and used tooth wear as a part of researches were searched and reviewed. Indices were divided by the purpose of research and reviewed the full history of evolution
Results- Indices were divided into 4 groups (Erosion, Restorative material evaluation, Age estimation, epidemiology) by purpose. Additionally quantitative methods were reviewed with full history of evolution. In age estimation field, qualitative method can be called gold standard with help of statistics. To evaluate restorative material, quantitative analysis is useful because material is homogeneous and doesnt have anatomical inner structure. Many of quantitative method developed from this field. Evaluating erosion is important especially in industrial environment and there have been efforts to have scoring system which is internationally accepted. Qualitative methods have limitation of subjective criteria. With a development of precise measuring instrument, computer graphic and 3D scan, quantitative method will play an more important role in tooth wear evaluating including epidemiology
