Abstract
The concept of discourse (Rede) in Being and Time must be defined in its range and function. Because it is difficult to understand the discourse only with the explanation in §34. We run into some words such as articulation and, totality-of-signification that are not immediately understood. We also encounter the claim that the discourse is different from language. In this thesis, I try to solve these problems by comparing major preceding researches on discourse and then giving my interpretation of the related passages in Being and Time.
First, the concept of articulation must be clarified to understand Heideggers definition that Discourse is the Articulation of intelligibility. Most preceding research regard discourse as making significations explicit, which cannot fully explain Heideggers definition of articulation, but we can overcome some of the interpretational limits if we see articulation as the determination of significations.
After that, the range of concept of discourse should be demarcated. This is performed by examining the non-linguistic, non-intentional ways of being of Dasein. There is a disputes of whether or not discourse has non-linguistic aspects. I argue that Being & Time supports not only non-linguistic aspects but also non-intentional ways of being for two reasons: First, discourse is a moment that constitutes Dasein's being even when there is no intentional activity being. Second, the call of conscience, a mode of discourse, is described as non-intentional. This non-intentional character is not limited to the call of conscience but includes all of Dasein's non-intentional ways of being.
Finally, I argue that the discourse has the function of building the world with others on the basis of the previous definition of articulation and range of discourse. This is supported by the concept of the world and the description of the result that the discourse brings about in Being and Time. Discourse can be classified into two types, according to the way it functions, and illustrated by everyday experience: structural discourse and active discourse. By understanding discourse as two types, we can explain some passages in Being and Time that are otherwise confusing.
Through these discussions, we acquire a definition that the discourse in Being and Time is a process of building the primary world with others, and it is done with linguistic, non-linguistic, intentional, and non-intentional ways. On the basis of the above definition we come to the conclusion that discourse constitutes Dasein's being by disclosing self and world with pre-intentional cognition of the significations, and listening to others and conscience.
