Abstract
This thesis aims to consider Stephen Cranes cognition of inner humane as analyzing the various psychology of the protagonist, Henry Fleming who is in the state of war in the Red Badge of Courage. Especially the ambivalent and ambiguous characteristics which is overall delineated in the Red Badge of Courage will be focused and discussed as the works thematic awareness. Analyzing the protagonists psychology and explaining the ambivalent and ambiguous characteristics of protagonist, Sigmund Freuds psychological theory will be adopted. The first chapter examines how this work approaches to inner humane by focusing on feeling of fear which is experienced by the protagonist in the state of war and then this feeling of fear will be connected with consciousness and unconsciousness theory of Freud. The second chapter analyzes the text which shows the gradual reinforcement of the instinct and impulsive elements of protagonist, based on the Freuds personality theory concept of id, by following the protagonists reaction to the battle of war. The final chapter continues to analyze the text relating to the superegos moral counter-action as the response to the ids appearance. And in the process of analyzing the aspects of superego, Freuds superego concept will also be adopted, comparing to the ids quality. These psychological analysis based on the id and superego theory shows that id and superego dont separately apply in the protagonists inside. Id and superego rather always move together, interchangeably with each other and then affect on the protagonists inside along with the dynamic psychology theory of Freud. As a result, the Red Badge of Courages ambivalence and ambiguity will be deduced from id and superegos dynamic and interchanging characteristics. By putting id and superegos dynamic and interchanging characteristics into the Red Badge of Courage, Crane describes his capacity of receiving any kind of human natures.
