서사시, 로맨스, 그리고 여성: 초서의 『트로일루스와 크리세이드』 읽기

Abstract

Chaucers Criseyde has to manage her survival precariously at the intersection of the epic and the romantic, the public and the private. Criseydes romantic love with Troilus is circumscribed by the epic milieu of the Trojan War, which is by nature hostile to women. The medieval Trojan narrative locates the romantic adventures of individual heroes and heroines in the epic and historical background of war and public concerns. In this epic context of Trojan history, women are completely subordinated and materialized, which dictates the fate of Criseyde, the romance heroine caught in the epic world. The romance ideology of courtly love itself, which showcases the knights absolute obedience to the lady, is no less hostile to Criseyde. Chaucer deliberately reveals how Criseyde is controlled by Troiluss service of love. By the rules of courtly love, Criseyde is bound to show mercy to Troilus regardless of her emotions or intentions. She also has to play the incapacitating role of an ideal but passive courtly lady. As a result, her private self is violated by masculine desire and conspiracy, while she is not allowed any public identity at all. Betraying Troilus is inevitable to Criseyde in this double predicament. On the one hand, it is true that her slydynge of corage serves the best interest of patriarchal society in war by facilitating necessary traffic in women, which is basically what the Trojan War is about. On the other, however, Criseydes betrayal leads to her disappearance from the narrative, thereby enabling her to escape male gaze and control. Troilus and Criseyde is a nuanced critique of romance and courtly love in which the role of woman is meticulously defined by the patriarchal control system.
