Abstract

This thesis tries to show the independent features of William Tyndales (1494?1536) reformative activities, which he performed by translating the bible into his mother tongue in the early sixteenth century, when the English authorities prohibited the publication of vernacular bibles. Most works on Tyndale have described him as a person who followed the ways of contemporary mainstream reformers or stood in the same political line. Due to this research tendency, Tyndales own point of view and stance have not come into view. Tyndale did not stop translating the bible from 1526, when he published vernacular bibles, to 1536, when he continued to criticize Henry VIII and the prelates and was burnt at the stake. During this time, he followed his own line of conduct for the Reformation. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the reasons why Tyndale was opposed to Henry VIII and the form of the church based on the conditional covenant, which he strongly emphasized.
Tyndale started to translate the bible out of a concern for the people who were not allowed to access biblical knowledge and out of a religious sense of duty. However, he did not do it simply for the popularization of the bible. After the conflict with the prelates and political community that did not allow the biblical translation, his translation started to take on a political nature. He consistently asserted disobedience to the king who did not follow the biblical teachings, in his The Obedience of a Christian Man and The Practice of Prelates. Furthermore, he not only restricted the kings authority to the temporal realm, but proposed governance norms. In particular, when the issue of King Henry VIIIs divorce came to the fore, he opposed it, stating he could not find any basis for it in the bible. Although the king did not allow him to translate the bible, Tyndale persisted. In this way, Tyndale opposed Henry VIII based on the awareness that kings do not have any absolute authority in the church.
Regarding biblical translation, Tyndale took a different approach that contemporary mainstream reformers had been employing. This began with the idea of the congregational church based on conditional covenant thought. In this sense, he kept his distance from Martin Luthers ideas. What is more, Tyndales point of view on covenant thought was more similar to Johann Heinrich Bullingers than Ulrich Zwinglis. The observance of the law and the fulfillment of the covenant were some of the main subjects he used to appeal to the English people. In order to fulfill the covenant of God, an understanding of the bible is first required. He thought that this removed the right of the church to monopolize Holy Scripture and eliminated the effect of the pope. Furthermore, the most important thing that he strongly desired was to establish the congregational church, which would be free from any political or religious authority.
On the basis of this idea, Tyndale tried to reject the traditional notions of the church and enlighten people about the images of the new church through the use of new translated words and polemical works. It is evident that Tyndale did not acknowledge the authority and hierarchy of the Catholic Church in that he translated εκκλησια (ecclesia) into congregation and πρεσβuτεροσ (presbyteros) into presbyter, which had been translated to church and priest, respectively, in the bible translated before Tyndales. The church he pursued was not the church as an institution, but a relatively equal gathering or a free meeting of the faithful. To realize his vision, he had to enable the English people to gain opportunities for right understanding of the scripture first. Therefore, Tyndale aimed to distribute the vernacular bible to them, which could be understood as much easier than before. His vernacular bible and polemical writings born through his efforts received a fervent response from contemporary elites to urban business men. First of all, the people who had read Tyndales vernacular bible began to conceive of the critical consciousness of the pope, prelates, and the system of the established church. Due to this phenomenon, the age of monopolizing biblical knowledge came to an end, building a significant foundation for the Protestant Reformation. Although Tyndale could not achieve his aim, as he did not give shape to Reformation plans and assemble supporters, he became a commemorable figure who independently realized the spirit of the Reformation in England by persisting in translating the bible and being burnt at the stake.
