Abstract
This thesis explores a possibility of aesthetic experience in Descartes philosophy. In his last work, The Passions of the Soul (Les passions de lâme) published in 1649, Descartes attempts to analyze a concept of passion. Moreover, he emphasizes the virtue of generosity which is acquired when we regulate excess of passion. In this respect, Descartes brings the hint of the possibility of establishing moral in his philosophical structure. However, he does not give a full and detailed explanation how could we get the virtue of generosity. Descartes just suggests a mental and physiological state of the generous by illustrating how generous man reacts to his passion while he appreciates literature and tragedy. Considered in this framework, what I try to do in this thesis is not only to make explicit Descartes concept of passion which is not discuss thoroughly, but also to provide a perspective that aesthetic experience serves to acquire generosity by regulating excessive impulse of passion.
In our discussion, first of all, we shall consider concept of cartesian passion by clarifying status of passion in his philosophical view. For Descartes, passion is proper to human being as a union of soul and body. Unlike ancient philosophers, Plato and Aristotle, Descartes understands human passion as a good one, because he thinks that passions inform a good thing and bad thing to me and contribute to maintaining of human life. Although passions good nature, it should be regulated by volition if it becomes excessive and out of control. He considers the man who can regulate excessive passions and use its good nature the generous.
Secondly, this thesis examines that the virtue of generosity has direct relevance to regulate excessive passion. The generous man has a unique joy and satisfaction due to the fact that he can be free to immoderation of passion and has inner peace, Descartes calls it as internal emotion (émotion intérieur). It is important that the virtue of generosity is considered as acquired character, so that could be cultivated. Then a man who is guided by passion how to be the generous? In this thesis I focus on the issue of generosity which is exemplified with aesthetic experience that means particular situation when we appreciate art such as literature and tragedy.
Unfortunately, Descartes never mentions the exact word aesthetic experience, but throughout his philosophical writings he repeatedly refers to emotions that occur when we appreciate music, literature and tragedy. According to Descartes, we have not only diverse passions when we enjoy art, but also have unique pleasure called intellectual joy. Diverse passions are never excessive because art is not real, but virtual. Therefore we never lose our mind from harmfulness of passions, then intellectual joy comes out. From these feelings we judge this artwork is beautiful. Especially interesting from out point of view is the fact that Descartes identifies internal emotion of the generous with intellectual joy of aesthetic experience. As a consequence, by appreciating art, we could experience the virtue of generosity analogically. That is, aesthetic experience would provide a chance to be generous man.
