The factors affecting the survival time of small-breed dogs with myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD) have been evaluated in only a small number of studies. The prognostic variables and the survival of small-breed dogs with MMVD were reviewed retrospectively. One hundred sixty-eight small-breed dogs (< 15 kg) that underwent cardiac evaluation and were diagnosed with MMVD based on a general clinical examination, radiology, an electrocardiogram, and echocardiography in Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Seoul National University (VMTH SNU) were included. The survival periods of the dogs were evaluated by clinical follow-up and a telephone interview with the owners and local hospitals. The mean follow-up duration was 14.3 ± 12.1 months. Among the small-breed dogs, Maltese and Shih Tzu comprised more than half the population (56%). In the univariate analysis, dyspnea, pulmonary edema, and the vertebral heart score (VHS) were significantly associated with the survival time. Some clinical variables, such as age, heart rate, and syncope, which were significant in previous studies, did not show any significance. Moreover, a significant difference of survival rates between International Small Animal Health Cardiac Council (ISACHC) classes was identified. The prognosis of dogs with congestive heart failure (CHF) that require a medical intervention should be evaluated using various indicators such as dyspnea and pulmonary edema. In clinical practice, monitoring the dogs VHS can be used to predict the animals prognosis.-
