구한말 프로테스탄티즘 윤리와 개화민족주의(1896-1900): 조선그리스도인회보와 독립신문

Abstract

본 연구는 상대적으로 구한말 개화담론 연구에서 조명되지 않아왔던 프로테스탄티즘 윤리가 당시 개화담론에 유의미한 영향력을 미쳤다는 점을 개신교 계열 신문인 <조선그리스도인회보>와 <독립신문>의 개화담론을 비교 분석함으로써 주장한다. 구체적으로 프로테스탄티즘 윤리의 주요한 특징이라 할 수 있는 노동윤리(Protestant Work Ethic)가 조선인들의 유의유식(遊依遊食)을 비판한 조선병과 생업(生業)을 가져야 한다는 <독립신문>의 개화담론에 결합되어 나타났다는 점을 비교분석을 통해 드러낸다. 한국 민족주의의 큰 두 가지 흐름을 저항민족주의와 개화민족주의로 분류할 때, 여기서 분석되는 개화담론은 1907년 이후 안창호에 의해 본격적으로 대두되는 개화민족주의의 원형이라 할 수 있다. 물론 유길준의 『서유견문』에서도 생계를 구하는 법, 그리고 정부의 직분에서 생업을 가져야 함과 정부가 그것을 뒷받침해야한다는 주장이 제기되는 점을 기억하면, <독립신문>의 개화담론이 프로테스탄티즘 윤리의 영향만을 받았다고는 볼 수 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 특히 게으름, 술, 담배, 노름과 조혼과 축첩 등 <조선그리스도인회보>에서 각 사람이 생업을 가지고 노동하는 것을 방해하는 것들에 대한 비판이 노동윤리를 중심으로 드러나는 점과 여성 및 신분차별과 위생문제에 대한 강조 등 『서유견문』에 나타나지 않는 개신교 세력에서 강조한 여러 이슈들이 <독립신문>의 개화담론에도 동일하게 등장하고 있다는 점에서 프로테스탄티즘 윤리의 상대적 영향력은 충분히 강조될 수 있다. 『서유견문』에서 소개되는 다양한 서구 문명의 제도와 생업에 대한 언급은 노동윤리에 대한 특별한 강조나 조선 인구의 대부분이 유의유식하는 것이 조선의 가장 큰 재앙이라는 문제의식에서 기인하지는 않았기 때문이다. 요컨대, <조선그리스도인회보>에서 드러나는 노동윤리와 각종 개인적, 사회적 개혁에 대한 주장들은 조선 인구의 대다수가 생업을 가지지 않는 것이 가장 큰 문제라는 <독립신문>의 문제의식에 영향을 주었던 것으로 보이며, 이는 구체적으로 조선병과 이를 극복하기 위한 개화담론으로 나타난다. 프로테스탄티즘의 노동윤리는 <독립신문>의 개화담론을 통해 나타났던 당시 개화담론에 일정 부분 영향을 미쳤으며, 이는 이후 개화민족주의라는 하나의 민족주의 흐름으로 계승되었다는 점에서 이에 대한 재조명이 필요하다고 여겨진다.

This study argues that Protestant Work Ethic had a significant influence on the Enlightenment discourse of Korea in the late 19th century, an influence that has been relatively neglected in previous studies of the Enlightenment discourse, by comparing both the common emphasis on Work Ethic and ethical doctrines in two Korean newspapers, Chosun Christian Journal and The Independent, published in 1897 and 1896 respectively. Specifically, the influence of the Protestant Work Ethic can be found in the word Chosun Syndrome in The Independent, which seriously criticized the fact that the majority of the Korean population did not make their own living by work, but relied on noble relatives or wasted their time in drinking and other traditional leisure activities including smoking, gambling, and keeping concubines. Several Enlightenment ethical doctrines were made in the Chosun Christian Journal, ranging from temperance to abolishing traditional customs such as early marriages and ancestral rites. Despite the variety of ethical doctrines, their main purpose of ethical doctrines ultimately converges on the emphasis of Work Ethic as the means to build a civilized nation. This study reveals this very aspect to have been combined with the Enlightenment discourse of The Independent, the most widely-known newspaper in Korea during this period. Protestant Work Ethic seems to have affected the birth of the word Chosun Syndrome itself and the ethical doctrines as a cure for Chosun Syndrome in The Independent. As the Enlightenment nationalism and Resistance nationalism are two distinct streams of Korean nationalism that lasted during the 20th century, it is meaningful to assess the influence of Protestant Work Ethic ideas on the early Enlightenment discourse as the prototype of Enlightenment nationalism especially in the context of studies in Korean nationalism.
