Abstract
Husserl criticized logic based on psychologism in Prolegomena to Pure Logic., the first volume of his Logical investigations. In Husserls view, it is inevitable that psychologism falls into relativism and skepticism, and such logic cannot be established properly as logic by the nature of the discipline. Traditionally, logic has been considered a normative science by which all human thoughts must be guided. If science is an aggregation of human thoughts, it is clear that the thoughts of science must also be governed by logical laws. If the reasoning behind science goes beyond the logical law, such science can no longer be established as science by its nature. Thus, if the foundation of logic, a discipline that deals with normative laws of thought, is shaken by relativism and skepticism, it seems clear that the foundation of other disciplines will not be secured. In this background, Husserl found that correct explanations of the nature of logic are indispensable to ensure that science is established as a science.
So where does the normativity of logic itself get its grounds? Husserl argues that all normative things are based on the preceding theoretical. If we apply this to logic, the normativity of logic can be said to be based on the theoretical nature of formal and deductive logic. Therefore, in order to clarify the normativity of logic, the theoretical character of formal and deductive logic must be explained first. Husserl refers to the theoretical logic that deals with the logical structure of purely ideal objects independent of experience as 'pure logic'.
The objects that pure logic deals with are ideal objects that are logical objects, not actual objects existing in space and time, and the logical validity derived from ideal objects has a universality that can be applied to all real objects. The relationship between real objects can be seen as a case in which logic laws derived from the relationship of ideal objects are applied. Thus, pure logic obtains the universality applicable to the subject in general, based on the universal validity of the logical laws of the objects it explores. This universality is the basis on which pure logic can be established as an academic discipline.
Regarding the identification of an object, it must be identified as not violating logical validity, whether it is real or not. Knowledge comes from grasping the relationship between objects, and can not be established as knowledge in the first place if the relationship between the objects violates logical validity. In this sense, logic is not only a discipline in itself, but also serves as a basic science that provides logical validity derived from the logical objects it deals with to other disciplines as a kind of law of thought. Therefore, pure logic as a basic science has the character of a theory of science which provides the grounds for other disciplines(Wissenschaftslehre).
We can find that the concept of pure logic is no longer maintained in the transcendental phenomenology developed after Prolegomena to Pure Logic. This is because transcendental phenomenology, which is a discipline requiring a thorough epistemological explanation, emerges as a discipline that provides the ultimate grounds for other studies. So what is the role of pure logic in transcendental phenomenology? Husserl has already stated in the second volume of Logical Investigations that epistemology can not be reduced to logic. As transcendental phenomenology reveals, the ultimate source of right of perception to Husserl is direct intuition, and we can not find a basis for recognition that has a more certain right than this. The epistemological thoroughness of phenomenological reduction shows that the status of phenomenology as a discipline that does not require other premises is different from other disciplines.
Let's go back to the problem of pure logic. Which of the two basic sciences, pure logic and transcendental phenomenology, comes first? This problem requires the following clarification. If pure logic is the basis of the normativity of other sciences, is transcendental phenomenology is also a science that follows the law of thought of pure logic? Or, on the contrary, is pure logic a discipline that asks for the basis of its founding in epistemological thoroughness of transcendental phenomenology?
In Ideen Ⅰ, Husserl argues that pure logic can be excluded from pure consciousness given a 'particular premise'. As far as pure consciousness is regarded as an object, pure consciousness itself is included in the object general, and therefore the law of formal logic and formal ontology, which is the study of the general, can not be excluded from pure consciousness. Husserl argues, however, that if certain premises are made, general formal logic and formal mathematics can be put in 'parentheses'. In other words, if it is premised that the quest for pure consciousness does not have any task other than a descriptive(deskriptiv) analysis that can be solved in pure intuition, phenomenology can be established as a science that explores transcendental pure consciousness in a purely descriptive way and mathematical deductive science can no longer function as a tool of inquiry. Therefore, deductive logic as a figurative science can be excluded from pure consciousness when viewed from the perspective of descriptive analysis of pure consciousness.
The pure logic presented in the Prolegonema can no longer function as normative and universal in transcendental phenomenology. However, pure logic still plays an important role in Husserl's transcendental phenomenology. The reason is because the formal ontology and pure theory of manifolds start from the idea of pure logic. Nevertheless, it seems clear that to Husserl the more universal science of essences is phenomenology as a strict academic discipline that can reflect on its foundation. In conclusion, we can see through the reduction of the role of pure logic in Husserl's transcendental phenomenology that the priority of epistemological rights in Husserl's philosophy precedes the universal normativity of pure logical discipline. And this is reaffirmed by the fact that Husserl has given the character of a new basic science to transcendental phenomenology.
