Abstract
John Berger and Jean Mohrs A Seventh Man is a project which gives voice to migrant workers who are silenced due to linguistic inability and social hierarchy. The formal structure of the project is a conscious attempt by the authors not to appropriate their subject matter. Instead of forcing a unifying narrative, they present various perspectives and materials, including statistics, poetry, fiction, Marxist excerpts, and most importantly, photographs. Photography, taken out of the flow of time, is characterized by discontinuity. It begets an ambiguity which desires narration. A Seventh Man is generally described as a reportage. However, while conventional narrative modes such as reportage fix the fluidity of the meaning of images within the singularity of accompanying language, the heterogeneity of voices are not repressed but encouraged in A Seventh Man. Photographs form their own independent narratives, and there are gaps not filled but left open for readers to create associative bridges of meaning. This form of hybridity makes it possible for readers to feel what Roland Barthes called punctum.
In A Seventh Man, readers discover the photographic subjects gaze. It transforms the flat images of migrant workers from the mere objects of a reportage to the living subjectivities. Readers have to imagine migrant workers leaving their home country and the ensuing loss of their social and political being. After their immigration, they become a replaceable component of a production line. Thinking of their time as a migrant worker as temporary, they not only exploit themselves but ignore the contradictory structure of capitalism that forced them to leave their home in the first place. Even if they return home, the world they come back to can never be the world they left behind. Although readers have no personal relationship with migrant workers, they intimately participate in constructing narratives of migrant workers by linking the discontinuity of the project with their own subjective experience. Punctum, which made this engagement possible, however, prevents readers from the work of mourning. Readers cannot introject or incorporate the otherness but remain disturbed by it. This is why the punctum is melancholic. It is also ethical because there is no easy catharsis.
