Abstract
Due to the Détente around 1970 and the inter-Korean Red Cross talks(1972), tensions between two Koreas have eased. Choi In-hoon, a novelist who came south over the border during Korean War, wrote One Day of the Novelist Gubo(1970-1972) under the social atmosphere of Détente. In the 1960s, Choi tried to imagine Asia beyond the Cold War by writing novels on the theme of neutrality and the Third World. These novels in 1960s focused on political themes and intellectuals. One Day of the Novelist Gubo written in the early 1970s, however, shows that Choi's vision beyond Cold-war has changed. Although this novel was initially planned as a series of loose short stories, Choi got a chance to serialize it in a monthly magazine, and One Day of Novelist Gubo changed to monthly report on Korean society and culture under Détente. Gubo, protagonist who came south over the border during Korean War, showed deep interest in changes of the Cold War system and inter-Korean contact through TV news and newspapers. Gubo continued to experience expectation, disappointment, surprise and boredom through news. Gubo, consequently, changed his thinking about unification through one year of experience. Gubo thought that unification should be carried out by the private sector, not by the state.
He explored the reason why the public sphere was not formed in Korea.
He also intended to build an alternative public sphere in the region based on intimate sphere with respect of daily lives of the people. The conclusion of Gubo can be named as public unity theory coming out to the square.
Gubo, an expert in social field of literature, tried to publish the works of writers who went north over the border who was banned after the division.
His attempt was not merely to link the divides of literary history, but to form a common tradition that could communicate with each other in various divisions of art. One Day of the Novelist Gubo is a novel in which a man who defected to South Korea imagines unification in everyday life.
Through this novel, Choi interpreted the unification as the discouse of the people and tried to imagine peace through social solidarity.
