율곡 이이의 평화사상

Abstract

율곡 이이(栗谷 李珥: 1536~1584)는 조선시대 전기 유명한 유학자이자 정치가였다 그는 평화라는 제목의 글을 따로 쓴 일은 없지만 그의 사상 가운데에는 평화적인 사상이 들어 있다. 유년 시절의 그의 행실을 살펴보면 그는 언행이 일치하는 평화주의자였음을 알 수 있다. 율곡은 사생활에서나 공적인 생활에서나 일관되게 갈등을 해소하고 사람들을 포용함으로써 평화를 가져오는데 평생토록 힘을 기울였다. 이이는 성리학의 통합적 우주관을 이론화 한 이기론(理氣論)을 제창하였다. 율곡은 인간의 네 도덕정신인 사단과 일곱 가지 감정인 칠정을 대립적으로 보는 인성론을 거부하였다. 오히려 상대적인 시각에서 선과 악을 해석해 화합과 평화를 추구하였다. 영정조 시대가 조선왕조의 중흥기로 불리는 이유 중 하나인 탕평책도 이이의 이런 화합, 통합의 정신에서 연유한다.

Yulgok Yi I (栗谷 李珥: 1536~1584) was one of the most prominent Confucian scholars and politicians of the Joseon Dynasty. Although he never wrote specifically on the subject of peace, his world view includes an ideology of peace. We can see that he is a pacifist in both word and deed by examining his behavior during his childhood. Yulgok consistently sought to alleviate tensions and embrace others as a means of creating peace throughout his public and private life. Yi I advocated the Liqi Theory(理氣 論) which conceptualized the Neo-Confucian integrated concept of the universe. Yulgok rejected the theory of human nature that argued that the four innate moralistic qualities (sadan) and the seven passions of man (chiljeong) are in conflict. Rather he interrupted good and evil from a relativistic perspective and pursued harmony and peace. One reason that the King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo period is considered a period of revival in the Jeseon Dynasty is the Tangpyeong policy and the spirit of harmony and integration espoused by Yi I.
