메이지 일본 경제발전의 복층성(複層性) 근대 대(對) 재래의 이원론을 넘어서

Abstract

본고는 메이지 유신 이후 일본의 경제성장이 서구의 산업기술이나 제도의 이식을 의미하는 근대적 경제발전과 에도시대 이래의 재래적 경제발전이 복층적으로 전개되는 하이브리드적 특징을 가지고 있었음을 증명하는 것을 과제로 한다. 산업혁명을 담당하는 리딩산업으로서의 면공업이 기계제 면사방적 회사와 농촌공업적 성격을 계속하는 재래직물업이라는 두 개의 다른 생산 형태에 의해 이루어지고 있었던 것은 구체적인 사례였지만, 그 배후에는 소농 경영의 노동력 배분전략이 있었으며 그것이 근대 부분으로의 노동력 공급행동도 규정하고 있었다. 또한 근세 이래의 자립적 지역사회를 담당하는 자산가와 명망가가 산업자본의 공급 뿐 아니라 지방재정을 통해 토목이나 교육 등의 사회적인프라 정비에도 참여하고 있었다. 이 소농사회를 기초로 하는 복층적 경제발전은 20세기 후반까지 일본경제의 모습을 규정하는 요인으로서 기능해가는 것이다.

This paper aims to show the hybrid nature of the economy of Meiji period comprising the process of economic modernization and the indigenous economic development. That the cotton textile industry was run by two different types of production — mechanized cotton spinning mills and handloom based indigenous weaving districts — exemplifies this, but behind the development of weaving industry was the labor allocation strategy of peasant households, which specified the labour supply behaviour to the modern industrial sectors. In addition, the paper highlights the role of regional society in motivating the wealthy notables to devote their wealth into industrial sectors as well as public infrastructure such as civil engineering and education. This multi-layered economic development based on the nature of peasant society lasted to influence Japans economic development up to the late twentieth century.
