한국 대통령의 성격 분석: 중요한 5특성 판별법(Big Five Trait Taxonomy)의 발전과 적용

Abstract

최근 미국 Trump 대통령의 성격이 국정운영에 미치는 영향력이 증대되면서 대통령의 성격(personality)에 대한 연구에 많은 사람들이 주목하고 있다. 우리의 경우도 마찬가지이다. 2017년 최순실 국정농단 사건에 의한 박근혜 대통령이 실패한 가장 근원적인 요인 역시 대통령의 성격에서 찾을 수 있다. 대통령의 성격은 그 이론적 중요성과 적실성이 높지만 그에 대한 조작적 정의 및 지표화가 매우 어렵다는 문제가 있다. 이는 그 중요성에도 불구하고 한국에서 대통령의 성격연구가 진지하게 이루어지지 못한 근본 요인이다. 성격 지표에 대한 측정 방법은 이론적으로 객관성을 담보하기 쉽지 않다. 나아가 그 결과 해석에 있어서도 연구자의 자의성이 높을 수 있어 연구결과에 대한 신뢰성과 타당성을 인정받기 어렵다. 이러한 문제인식을 바탕으로 본 연구는 박정희 대통령 이후 역대 대통령의 성격에 대한 보다 직접적이고 생동적인 관찰과 분석을 통해서 대통령의 리더십을 이해해 보고자 한다. 여기서 직접적이고 생동적이라고 함은 해당 논문의 기존 연구와의 차별성의 핵심인데, 이는 역대 대통령들과의 직접 대면 접촉할 수 있는 연구자에게서만 가능한 것이다. 개인 대통령들과의 직접 대화를 통한 성격 분석이 반복되는 경우 성격분석은 비교되면서 축적된다. 본 연구는 박정희 대통령 이후 역대 대통령들과의 직접 대면 접촉 경험들을 축적하여 상호 비교하면서 중요한 5특성 판별법(Big Five Trait Taxonomy)을 발전·적용하여 역대 대통령들의 리더십과 국정운영과정을 분석한다.

This paper evaluates the personality traits of Korean presidents that shaped their political leadership. The importance of personality traits of each Korean president is understood as well as significance of the traits in their political successes and failures. However, it is very difficult to measure the personality traits of Korean presidents and the significance of their traits on their leadership qualities empirically. This paper empirically analyzes the personality traits of the Korean presidents using the Big Five Trait Taxonomy (BFTT) from personality psychology in order to overcome these limitations in the study of Korean presidential leadership.
