This essay examines two film adaptations to demonstrate the opposite ways stories are selected and adapted in contemporary film. Adaptation follows Kaufman's struggle to adapt an uncinematic book about orchids into a Hollywood movie. Torn between his fidelity to the original text and Hollywoods demand for conventional trope, Charlie learns that the fidelity in adaptation does not mean to be faithful to the original but signifies the commitment to the constant transformation for becoming the fittest in today's competition for cultural selection. What remains a problem is Charlie's adapting success corresponds to his metamorphosis from an emasculated man to a machismo. In contrast, Moonlight has no interest in creating a proliferating intertext out of McCraney's source story. Chiron's story as a poor black queer boy in Florida is by no means the fittest story to be easily adapted for a wide audience. But the director/playwrights elegant cinematic collaboration shows that in the era of textual proliferation adaptation has an ethical responsibility to voice the story of the socially and sexually unfit.-
