In Russian language, aspect and tense, as distinct grammatical categories, are particularly closely related to each other. In particular, depending on the aspect, the future tense has two different forms. Many researchers have studied the semantic differences between the two forms. However, only a few statistical studies focus on the frequencies of occurrence of the two future tense forms in the Russian corpus. In addition, studies have rarely examined how lexical semantic factors work in using two forms of future tense. Therefore, in this study, we adopt a statistical approach to clarify the relationship between the future tense and aspect in Russian language by examining the frequencies of occurrence of the two future forms of Russian verbs according to the concrete vocabulary group in the national Russian corpus. Using these statistical data, we prove the hypothesis that Russian verbs meaning eventuality or punctuality prefer a perfective form in the future tense due to a modal characteristic of this tense and an aspectual feature of the perfective form. * Lecturer in the Department of Russian Language and Literature at Sungkyunkwan University.
