Abstract
M-type hexaferrites with high magnetic saturation (Ms) and coercivity (Hc) have been widely used in various industrial applications since they have many advantages such as cost-effectiveness and good chemical stability. To improve the magnetic properties of SrFe12O19 (Sr M-type hexaferrite), the co-substitution of La-Co for the Sr-Fe sites in SrFe12O19, respectively, has been reported to be very effective. Previous reports on the variation of the magnetic properties as a function of the La-Co substituents, however, are not in good agreement. In addition, the effect of Fe deficiency on the magnetic properties of Sr-La-Co M-type hexaferrite has never been reported yet. Further, it is highly desirable to reduce the usage of expensive Co and La raw materials without sacrificing the magnetic properties. Therefore, in this study, we first tried to confirm the effect of La-Co substitution on the magnetic properties of Sr M-type. Next, we tried to identify the effect of Fe deficiency on magnetic properties of Sr-La-Co M-type. Finally, we tried to find cost-effective elements which can replace the expensive Co.
To synthesize the Sr-La-Co M-type hexaferrites, the precursor materials of SrCO3, Fe2O3, La2O3, Co3O4, Mn2O3 and Al2O3 were weighed, ball-milled with additive (SiO2) for 24 h, and then calcined at 1250-1300℃ for 2 h in air. After calcination, samples were ball-milled with additives (CaCO3, SiO2), pressed into pellets, and then sintered at 1200-1250℃ for 1 h in air. The calcination and sintering temperatures could be optimized by measuring the magnetic properties of samples. With these optimum processing conditions, we performed the experiments on the La-Co substitution for Sr M-type hexaferrites and also on the Fe deficiency of La-Co-Sr M-type hexaferrites. For the composition of Sr0.85La0.15Fe10.75Co0.15O19, we tried to partially or fully replace Co with Mn, Al and Mn-Al.
The results are as the following. First, with increasing the amount of La-Co substitution (x = 0-0.3), Ms was decreased while both Hc and Ha (anisotropy field) were increased, which are in good agreement with previous reports on sintered Sr-La-Co M-type ferrites. Next, for Fe-deficient Sr-La-Co M-type ferrites (y = 10-11.85 in Sr0.85La0.15FeyCo0.15O19), as y is decreased, Ha is increased while both Ms and Hc are decreased, which is most probably due to an increased average grain size. However, further study is required for a complete understanding of this behavior. Finally, the sample of Sr0.85La0.15Fe10.75Co0.15-xMxO19 (M: Mn, Al) exhibited the highest magnetic properties when half of Co was substituted by Mn (x = 0.075), suggesting that
it is possible to partially replace the expensive Co with Mn, and further it may be possible to find other cost-effective elements.
