Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of cognitive reappraisal and suppression strategies on state shame, positive and negative affect, challenge and controllability appraisals of situational meaning appraisal after recalling a shameful experience. The experiment was conducted with 72 undergraduate and graduate students. After recalling a shameful event they had experienced, they were randomly assigned to 2 groups in terms of emotional regulation strategies: cognitive reappraisal group and suppression group. The cognitive reappraisal group was instructed to reappraise the situation to be more reparable. The suppression group on the other hand, was instructed to suppress the emotion and expression when they think of the event. All of the participants also completed a questionnaire to measure state shame, positive·negative affect, and situational meaning appraisal right before and after the emotional regulation. Out of 72 pieces of data collected, 66 data were used for analysis. ANCOVA was performed for the results of state shame and positive·negative affect, while MANCOVA was performed for the situational meaning appraisal.
The results demonstrated that the cognitive reappraisal group reported the tendency of decreasing level of state shame than those in the suppression group. Also, the cognitive reappraisal group reported a higher level of positive affect than the suppression group. However, the decrease in the level of negative affect was not significant. Lastly, the cognitive reappraisal group reported a higher level of challenge and controllability appraisals than the suppression group. Hence, cognitive reappraisal was the more effective strategy in regulating shame than suppression, by reducing the level of state shame and increasing the level of positive affect, challenge and controllability appraisals.
Some suggestions from these results are as follows: First, the effects of cognitive reappraisal and suppression were examined based on the experimental procedure, as immediate emotional regulation strategies when people experience shame. Also, it is confirmed that cognitive reappraisal in terms of reparability of shameful situation can be an adaptive strategy to regulate the shame and its reaction. In this way, this study provides counselors with an effective intervention to adaptively regulate shame of clients, considering shame is an important emotion in counseling.
