Abstract
In recent years, rap music is highly popular in China and South Ko-rea
rapper fashion has had a great impact on youth in both countries. At this point, this study is trying to gain a deeper understanding of the musical characteristics and fashion style of underground rappers in China and South Korea. Due to rapper fashions influence on modern fashion trends, research on rapper fashion has been conducted steadily in the field of apparel. However, previous studies mainly focused on mainstream rappers or compared the rapper fashion in Korea and the United States. A study on the fashion style of underground rappers has yet to be conducted.
The purpose of the study is to reveal the fashion characteristics and the inherent meaning of underground rappers fashion in both China and South Korea. In order to achieve these research objectives, research questions were set as follows. First of all, the history of rap music is studied literally, and the concept of rap music and changes in characteristics are grasped. Secondly, the researcher examines the images and messages delivered by mainstream U.S. rappers through fashion, and considers the fashion styles of underground rappers in China and South Korea. Lastly, the study explores the characteristics of underground rappers fashion in China and South Korea and the significance of the messages it conveys for those involved with it.
Qualitative research methodologies including literature research and in-depth interview were the primary techniques used to solve the research questions. Magazines and internet sources, pre-research were used to study hip-hop culture, hip-hop fashion, rap music, and rapper fashion. This study looks at images and messages delivered through fashion by the mainstream American rappers and examines the fashion styles of underground rappers in Korea and China. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 Chinese underground rappers and 10 Korean underground rappers to reveal and explore their fashion style and view of fashion. The recording was carried out with the consent of the participants, and a text analysis was conducted based on the data from the recording transfer.
As a result, participants' fashion style were categorized into five styles, which were authentic old school hip-hop fashion style, popularized hip-hop fashion style, retro-sensitive vintage styles, easy sports casual style, and trendy street style.
Rappers from both countries consider that hip-hop fashion style can show their rappers' identity. The difference of the influence of hip-hop culture and the popularity of rap music exists between China and Korea. It affects not only the rapper's musical characteristics, but also their fashion style. While Korean underground rappers' fashions are more trendy, Chinese underground rappers' fashions show a stronger characteristic of hip-hop fashion.
Tattoos as a sign, are important to rapper fashion, and can easily reveal the rapper's identity. Though the Chinese public holds a negative attitude towards tattoos, Chinese underground rappers have less concerned, as most of them have tattoos. Meanwhile, Korean underground rappers are relatively timid with tattoos. They regard rapper as an unsafe job, and they also take responsibility for getting a tattoo.
Korea and China are both influenced by the Oriental Confucian ideology, so it is hard for the general public to accept American rap music that contains violence, drugs, sex and other content that lead to negative perceptions. Due to the public's negative view of rappers, some Korean underground rappers intentionally try to hide their identity by wearing a fashion style that differs from the authentic rapper image.
Hip-hop fashion is not a dress code for rappers, but is becoming the most important way for them to express their individuality. Underground rappers are constantly pursuing individuality and innovation, which can be an inspiration for fashion merchandise projects targeting young people in China and South Korea. Since the vintage shop market is not active in China, it would be good to consider developing vintage-style clothes when planning designs. In addition, underground rappers in Korea and China put more importance on design and the expression of personality in comparison to the brand name, making them suitable for promoting indie brands.
This study is meaningful in that it conducted qualitative research to examine the fashion characteristics of underground rappers in Ko-rea and China. Underground rappers are thought to be meaningful research subjects in that they can provide information that can be used in the fashion planning and design direction of the youth-targeted fashion industry through the fashion recognition of personality-seeking behavior and fashion. The study limited the number of participants in the recruitment process. The limitations include the failure to completely rule out the judgment of researchers and the difficulty in generalizing the results.
