최한기 철학 연구

Abstract

1. 최한기 철학은 대체로 경험주의로 평가되지만, 형이상학적 요소 또한 포함하고 있는 것으로 평가되기도 한다. 이 논문에서는 이러한 최한기 철학의 두 면모를 최한기가 처음에 제시하였던 경험주의적 방법론의 윤리이론으로서의 불충분한 점을 이후에는 형이상학적 체계를 정립함으로써 보충하고자 한 것으로 설명하고자 하였다.

2. 전기 저술에서 최한기는 추측이라는 경험주의적 방법론을 제시하면서 성리학의 리(理), 불교의 깨달음, 천주교의 인격적 신에 대한 믿음 등을 비판한다. 최한기가 이전 학문을 비판하는 이유는 그들이 객관적으로 경험할 수 없는 것을 학문의 대상으로 삼았기 때문이다. 따라서 최한기의 추측은 구체적인 사물의 이치를 파악하고(周通), 이에 알맞은 일 처리법을 모색하여 적용한 후(變通), 그 결과를 확인하는 과정(證驗)으로 이루어진다.

3. 최한기는 지식을 유행지리(流行之理)와 추측지리(推測之理)로 구분함으로써 진리 그 자체와 진리에 대한 탐구를 구분한다. 이에 따르면 경험주의적 방법에 의해 도출된 결론은 상대적인 위상을 가질 수밖에 없다. 추측지리는 유행지리에 점점 더 가까워질 수는 있지만 유행지리 그 자체는 아니기 때문이다. 이는 과학보다는 윤리에 문제가 된다. 아주 먼 곳의 별이 움직이는 이치는 당장 몰라도 되지만 선과 악, 옳고 그름에 대한 판단은 항상 필요하며, 윤리가 절대적인 가치를 가지지 못한다면 사욕을 추구하는 개인을 강제할 수 없기 때문이다.

4. 후기 저술에서 최한기는 운화리(運化理)라는 보편적인 원리를 상정하고 사등운화(四等運化)의 형이상학적 체계를 정립한다. 이로써 최한기는 인간이 사물에 대한 거듭되는 탐구를 통하여 운화리를 파악할 수 있고, 운화리를 안다면 이로부터 인사(人事)의 기준을 도출해낼 수 있다고 주장한다. 그러나 실제로 최한기는 운화리로부터 어떤 구체적인 가치나 제도를 직접적으로 도출해낼 수는 없었다. 다만 최한기는 경험주의적 방법에 의해 도출된 결론을 형이상학적 체계에 의해 정당화하는 방법을 취한다.

5. 최한기의 학문은 경험주의적 방법론을 중심으로 한 추측에서 과학과 윤리를 통합함으로써 윤리에 절대성을 부여할 수 있는 기학(氣學)으로 변화하였다. 따라서 최한기는 처음에는 추측과 배치되는 방법으로써 도덕성을 추구하는 성리학에 대해서 비판적이었지만, 기학을 정립한 이후에는 성리학 또한 도덕성을 추구하였던 점을 인정하여 자신의 학문 내에 포섭하고자 한다.

1. Choe Hangis philosophy is generally regarded as "empiricist", but it is also considered to include "metaphysical elements." This paper tries to explain these inconsistencies as an attempt to complement the imperfection in his earlier empirical approach with a metaphysical system in his later life.

2. In his earlier writings, Choe suggests an empirical methodology of speculation, while criticizing li(理) of Neo-Confucianism, awakening of Buddhism, and the personal God of Catholicism. The main reason Choe criticizes these disciplines is because they made the subjects of studies as disciplines that cannot be objectively observed and experienced. Therefore, his speculation is composed of grasping the meaning of concrete objects(周通), finding and applying adequate work-processing methods(變通), and affirming the outcomes(證驗).

3. Choe distinguishes between the truth itself and the quest for truth by dividing knowledge into Yuhaengji-li(流行之理) and Chucheukji-li(推測之理). According to this line of reasoning, conclusions drawn from empirical methods would have a relative importance at best. Chucheukji-li can come close to Yuhaengji-li, but it is not the Yuhaengji-li itself. This is a problem of ethics rather than of science. Even though we do not have to know the reason for movements of the distant stars, judgment of good and evil, right and wrong is immediately necessary

if ethics does not have an absolute value, it would be impossible to force a self-interested individual to conform to social norms.

4. In his later writings, Choe assumes the universal principle of "unhwa-li(運化理)" and establishes a metaphysical system of "Sadeung-unhwa(四等運化)." In this way, he suggests that humans can grasp the unhwa-li through the repeated exploration of things. It is then possible to derive the general standards of human affairs by unhwa-li. However, in reality he was unable to directly derive any value or system from unhwa-li. By the empirical methods, he instead takes an approach to justify the conclusions drawn through metaphysical systems.

5. Choe Hangi's academic focus changed from speculating empirical methodology to Gihak that incorporated ethics into absoluteness by integrating science and ethics. As a result, he was at first critical of Neo-Confucianism, which pursued morality through methods other than speculation. However, after establishing Gihak, he acknowledges that Neo-Confucianism also seeks morality and tries to embrace it in his own system.
