Abstract
This study attempts to obtain macroeconomic implications on the movement of corporate profit rates using the methodology of Kiyota et al. (2009). In terms of analysis,「Survey of Business Activities」 from 2006 through 2009 by Statistics Korea were panelized and used to examine corporate total profit rates by analyzing them in accordance with company specific profit rates and industry-period specific demand shocks.
In the case of corporate specific profit rates, compared to the entire industry average of 2006, the first and secondary industries showed profit rates below average while the tertiary industry relatively surpassed it. This can explain that is means the market power of companies in the tertiary industry is relatively greater than that of companies in the secondary industry. Examining major businesses, in the case of average profit rates of companies appertaining to manufacturing chemical products, the number exceeded the manufacturing industry average while companies in manufacturing electronic machinery and transportation machinery showed profit rates falling short of the manufacturing industry average. In the case of industry-period specific demand shocks, global financial crisis does not greatly affect the primary industry, whereas the effects appears to be significant on the secondary and tertiary industries. Especially in the case of the secondary industry, negative(-) demand shocks were found even before the financial crisis and while businesses showed a sign of recovery in 2009, in the case of the tertiary industry, the demand shocks were positive(+) up until 2007 but then changed to negative(-) and conditions have continued until 2009.
In the results of the analysis of the determinant factors of corporate profit rates, in the case of manufacturing businesses, differences in profit rates between major companies and small and medium-sized businesses did not require much attention, while on the other hand, in the case of the service industry, the difference in profit rates between major companies and small and medium-sized businesses were significant. In the case of smaller manufacturing companies, the profit rates increased in accordance with the weight on fixed assets, and profit rates were low in big-sized companies or companies with high level of intensity for research and development. In terms of the service industry, profit rates were high in large-sized companies or companies with higher emphasis on fixed assets while profit rates were low in companies with high labor productivity. In the case of small and medium-sized companies, profit rates were higher in companies with a longer corporate history.
