Examining Japanese Influences in Thailand: Cosplay Subculture Qualities in Cosplayers Perspective

Abstract

The popularity of Japanese pop culture in Thailand has led to the boom of Japanese pop culture fan communities. One of the most vivid fan groups in Thailand is the cosplay. By evaluating the subculture qualities of cosplay in Thailand, the research is able to reveal the form of influence that Japanese subculture can have on Thai teen culture. If the cosplay in Thailand is just a mere activity, it means that cosplaying in Thailand is simply a consumption of Japanese pop culture with no deeper meaning relating to it. However, if the research finds out that Thai cosplay community is a subculture, we may be able to see how Japanese pop culture can shape the creation of subculture in Thailand. This research reveals the mentioned three qualities of a subculture through the experiences of the 20 cosplayers in both within and outside cosplay setting. The distinctiveness of the cosplay community can be found in the definition of the cosplay given by the cosplayers themselves. The shared cosplay norms, values and way of life are reflected through the reasons for their participation in cosplay activities, their experiences and life style both in both offline and online platforms. Finally, the relations that the cosplay communities has with Thai mainstream culture are presented through the fact that cosplayers choose to fulfill the requirement of the main culture before they change their role back to the cosplayers. Moreover, the links between these main and sub cultures appear when Thai cosplay community play the good citizen role by using their abilities to promote a particular social issue in Thailand.

태국에서의 일본 대중문화의 인기는 일본 대중문화 팬클럽을 활성화 시켰다. 태국에서 활성화된 팬클럽은 코스프레이다. 태국에서 코스프레의 하위문화의 질을 평가함으로서 이 연구는 일본 하위문화가 태국 10대문화에 미치는 영향의 종류를 밝혀낼 수 있다. 태국에서 코스프레가 단순한 활동이라면, 태국에서 코스프레는 일본 대중문화를 깊은 의미 없이 단지 소비하는 것일뿐이다. 하지만 이 논문은 태국 코스프레 모임은 하위문화로서 일본 대중문화가 어떻게 태국의 하위문화를 형성하는데 영향을 미쳤는지 알아보았다.

이 논문은 다음 세가지 하위문화의 질을20명의 코스프레 행위자의 코스프레 안과 밖의 경험으로서 밝혀냈다. 코스프레 모임의 특수성은 코스프레 행위자 스스로가 말한 정의에서 찾아낼 수 있다. 공유된 코스프레 표준, 가치, 인생의 길은 그들의 코스프레 활동 참여 이유를 통해 반영되었다. 마지막으로, 코스프레 모임과 태국 주류문화의 관계는 코스프레 행위자는 그들이 코스프레 행위자로서의 역할을 바꾸기 전에 주류문화의 필수요건을 충족시킨다는 사실을 통해 나타났다. 또한, 이런 주류문화와 하위문화의 관계는 태국 코스프레모임은 그들의 능력을 활용하면서 태국의 특정한 사회이슈를 고취시키며 좋은 시민의 역할을 한다는 것이 나타났다.
