Abstract
This study develops and tests a theoretical model to understand music file sharing behavior via e-mail and instant messaging. The theoretical model is developed from a comprehensive literature review on theory of reasoned action (TRA), social identity, and the deterrence theory. Attitude toward to music file sharing behavior might be explained by the deterrence theory and social identity theory. The hypotheses are tested using survey data. The results from partial least squares (PLS) analyses suggest that social identity positively affects attitude toward music file sharing behavior while the perceived severity and certainty of punishment do not have significant effects on the attitude. The findings highlight the important role of social identity for explaining music file sharing behavior without monetary benefits in return.
