이안 맥하그의 조경관

Abstract

본 연구는 "이안 맥하그의 업적에 치중한 기존 연구의 흐름, 생태 개념을 피상적으로 차용하는 조경 실천의 양상, 1960년대의 조경과 1980년대의 조경을 포섭하는 동시대 조경의 언디자인 현상"이라는 문제의식을 배경으로 다음과 같은 목적에 접근하고자 한다: (1)맥하그의 저작을 중심으로 생태계획의 특성을 이론ㆍ목적ㆍ방법론의 차원에서 도출하고, 과학ㆍ예술ㆍ자연ㆍ도시ㆍ디자인에 대한 맥하그의 태도를 해명한다. (2)그러한 맥하그의 조경관이 함의하는 동시대적 가치를 논의한다.

맥하그는 세계를 인간중심적인 것과 그 반대의 것으로 구분한다. 따라서 그는 과학을 두 개의 과학으로, 예술을 두 개의 예술로 자각한다. 맥하그의 이분법적 세계관에 대한 이해와 더불어, 맥하그가 과학과 예술, 자연과 문화의 이분법을 조장했다는 평가들에 대한 재고가 필요하다. 맥하그는 사이트의 조사와 분석을 위한 도구로서 과학(생태학)을 수용함으로써, 주관적 해석과 예술적 표현의 여지를 개방한다. 그는 자연과의 소통을 중시하는 예술을 선호하였으며, 미ㆍ예술ㆍ형태에 대한 문제까지 과학으로 해결해야 한다고 주장한 바는 없다. 과학과 예술, 객관과 주관, 분석과 표현에 대한 구체적 논의가 필요하다. 맥하그는 자연을 신성한 것으로, 신의 피조물과 동반자의 위상으로, 도시의 골격을 구성하는 주체로 인식한다. 맥하그의 자연은 이상향으로서의 도피적 낙원도, 도시의 대립 항도, 미화의 수단도 아니며 무조건적인 보존과 보호의 대상도 아니다. 자연은 도시의 골격과 오픈스페이스 체계를 조직하는 주체로서의 위상을 갖는다. 맥하그는 시대적 흐름과 조경학의 한계를 인식함으로써 과학자들과의 교류를 통한 협업의 디자인을, 그리고 도면 중첩법을 통해 복합 토지이용을 모색함으로써 생성의 디자인을 전개한다. 그는 회화나 건축 등 외부로부터의 이론과 개념을 차용하지 않고, 사이트의 내적 조건을 검토하는 것에서부터 조경을 시작한다. 맥하그는 땅의 고유한 속성들(자연)을 파악하고 그것을 준거로 지역 사회의 가치와 목표(문화)를 반영하는 계획을 추구한다. 이에 따라 조경가의 역할이 해석자와 중재자로 변모한다. 또한 도면 중첩법은 단순히 사이트의 정보를 나열하는 전시의 차원, 클라이언트를 설득하는 수단의 차원을 넘어, 복합 토지이용의 적지를 선정하는 차원에서 전개된다.

맥하그와 생태조경의 정체성을 고찰한 본 연구는 맥하그 이전ㆍ이후 조경의 태도를 대자적으로 파악한다. 맥하그의 조경관과 그의 조경 실천은 "새로운 사이트, 새로운 미적 경험, 다차원적 협업, 계획과 설계의 통합, 탄력성과 가독성"에 주목하는 동시대 조경의 여러 특성들을 공유한다. 이러한 측면에서 현대 조경사를 반목과 대립의 역사가 아닌 계승과 보완의 역사로 조망할 수 있다. 또한 예술ㆍ도시ㆍ문화를 포괄해야만 하는 생태조경의 행보를 거론할 수 있다. 맥하그의 업적에 대한 평가와 그의 조경관에 대한 연구는 늘 병행되어야 한다. 현 시대에 적용 가능한 대안은 특정 결과물에 대한 수정이나 보완에 있는 것이 아니다. 진정한 진보적 대안은 결과물에 깊숙이 내재한 태도와 그 가치에 대해 성찰하는 실용적 실천의 과정에서 비롯된다.

This study is based on the following issues: (1)Failures to reveal something valuable behind Ian McHargs achievements, (2)Aspects to borrow the conception of ecology into many landscape architectural practices, (3)Tendencies of contemporary landscape architecture to cooperate the features from the 1960s and 1980s landscape architectural practices. In this context, This study approaches to the following purposes: (1)Deducing the characteristics of ecological landscape planning from the aspects of its theory, intention, and method and then explicating McHargs attitude toward science, art, nature, city, and design. (2)Discussing the contemporary values from McHargs thoughts and perspectives on landscape architecture. McHarg distinguishes everything as anthropocentric things and opposite things. Therefore, He appreciates the science as anthropocentric science/opposite science, and the art as anthropocentric art/opposite art.Along with the understanding the McHargs dichotomy, we need to reconsider the criticism of the encouraging the segmentation of science/art and nature/culture. He opens the room to admit the subjective interpretation and artistic presentation by accepting the science(ecology) as a tool for surveying and analysing sites. He preferred the art focusing the relations with nature, and he didnt insist that science can deal with the matters of beauty, art, and form. McHarg sees the nature as the sacred, the equal creature by God, the surviving partner, and the main character forming the city. His nature is neither the escapist paradise as utopia, the opposition against city, nor the object for the unconditional preservation. His nature gets the status organizing the open-space system and city-form. McHarg proceeds the design of cooperation by understanding the spirit of the times and limits of the then landscape architecture, and proceeds the design of creation by using the overlay method for selecting the mixed land use. He starts the landscape architectural practice by surveying the site conditions instead of borrowing the idea or theory from the outside (painting or architecture). He figures out the unique properties in sites, and then develops planning reflecting nature and culture. For this reason, we can see the change of the role of landscape architects. In addition, map-overlay method is employed to select the mixed land use as well as presenting the current situation, and persuading the clients. This study considering the identity of McHarg and his ecological planning understands the features of previous or contemporary landscape architecture. His thoughts on landscape architecture and his practices share the various features of contemporary landscape architecture: New sorts of sites and aesthetic experience, multi-dimensional cooperation, integration of planning and design, and resilience and legibility. In this context, we can see the history of modern landscape architecture as complementation or supplementation not as antagonism. And this study raises an issue of ecological landscape planning and design to include total aspects of art, city, and culture. The study on the McHargs achievements should go side by side with considering his thoughts on landscape architecture. Real alternative is not in the modification or supplementation of certain achievements. Rather, It is in the process of speculating the thoughts, attitudes, and values in certain achievements.
