주관적 기록을 통한 경험과 상상의 의미화에 관한 연구

Abstract

나는 사소한 개인적 경험들이 사건으로 변화하는 과정에 관심을 갖고 있다. 여기서 사건이라 함은 사회적으로 문제를 일으키거나 주목을 받을 만한 뜻밖의 일을 의미하는 사전적 정의 보다는, 일상적이고 평범하여 지나치기 쉬운 일들이 어느 순간 나에게 중요하고 의미 있는 것으로 변화하는 과정을 지칭한다. 이러한 경험의 의미화는 일상과 현실에 대한 나의 의식적인 질문과 상상에서 시작되었다. 일상이란 날마다 반복되는 생활의 연속이기에 우리가 그 속에서 마주하게 되는 현실은 고정적이다. 현실 속 대상에 대한 반복적인 경험과 인식은 우리를 무감각한 존재로 만들기도 한다. 그렇지만 우리는 가끔 익숙했던 일상, 현실 속에서 낯설음을 발견하기도 한다. 그리고 그 생소한 감정은 현실을 바라보는 관점에 대한 의심과 상상의 여지를 가능케 하는 힘을 가지고 있다. 나의 작업은 일상 속 고정적인 인식의 틀 속에서 개인적인 상상과 믿음의 행위를 통해 잊혀지거나 의식하지 못하는 것을 발견하고 드러내는 과정으로, 그 시각적 결과물을 통해 보는 이로 하여금 현실을 환기하고 다시 바라볼 수 있도록 하는 계기를 마련하는 것이다. 나의 작업에서 의식적으로 바라보기는 일회적이거나 우연적인 경험이 아니라 오히려 반복적인 경험을 통해 이루어지는 주관적 해석과 표현의 행위이다. 매일 지나가며 바라보는 가로수에게 관심을 갖고 애정을 확인하고자 했던 <에피소드>, 서울 외곽 동네의 주목받지 못하는 일상적 풍경을 비일상적 시각으로 해석한 <독산십이경>, 희망이라는 추상적 단어가 빈번한 사용만큼이나 우리의 현실 속에 많이 존재하는지를 확인하고자 했던 <희망을 찾아서>는 이러한 나의 태도가 반영된 작업들이다. 대상의 재현과 표현의 결과보다 경험과 기록의 축적이라는 측면에서 나의 작업은 과정 중심적이며 수행적인(performativity) 성격을 가지며, 경험의 시각화 과정에서 나는 주관적인 기록의 방식으로 작업을 진행한다. 기록은 있는 그대로의 사실을 명시적으로 드러내는 동시에 그것의 의도적인 선택과 배치의 방식에 따라 연출된 상황을 보여주는 것이 가능하다는 면에서 작업에 있어 중요한 형식적 요소이다. 특히 사진을 주요한 매체로 선택하여 작업하는데, 사진매체가 지닌 기록의 명증성과 지표적 성격, 그리고 기억을 불러일으키는 보조적 수단으로써의 특징은 작업의 시각화에 있어 효과적이고 기록의 도구라는 측면에서도 매우 적합한 매체이다. 그리고 사진과 더불어 텍스트의 활용은 사진이 객관적인 기록매체의 성격을 벗어나게 하는 역할을 하여 이미지에 내러티브적, 허구적 성격을 부여한다. 또한 이러한 과정에서 내가 경험하는 일정시간과 공간은 실제의 영역으로 지금 현재 여기를 주목할 수 있게 하고, 작업을 통해 현실을 환기하는 효과를 기대할 수 있다.

I am interested in the process of trivial personal experiences changing into events. What I mean by events is not its dictionary definition of something that arouses social problems, is notable, and unexpected. Rather, it refers to a transformative process of ordinary and common things that are easy to lose sight changing into something very important and meaningful to me at a certain moment. Signifying the experiences started from my conscious question and imagination on daily life and reality. Because repetitive life continues in our daily life, the reality we face within the life is fixed. Repetitive experience and perception on the subject in reality may lead us to be an insensitive being. But at times, we discover unfamiliarity in our daily lives and reality that we are so accustomed to. And this strange sentiment has a power to leave us a possibility to question and imagine our perspective of looking at the reality. My work is a process of discovering and revealing what has been forgotten or unaware of through individual imagination and act of faith within the frame of fixed perception in daily life. Looking at things consciously in my work is not a one-off or coincidental experience but rather an act of subjective interpretation and expression through repetitive experiences. My purposes are reflected in the following chapters: <Episode>, which I intended to discover the interest and love for street trees I see every day passing by; <12 famous places of Doksan>, which interprets unnoted daily sceneries of Seoul suburbs in a non-daily perspective; and <Chasing Hope in Seoul>, which I intended to look whether an abstract word, hope, exists in our reality compared to its frequent use. In the perspective of accumulation of experiences and records, rather than in that of reproduction of subject and result of expressions, my work is process-focused, performative, and it is carried out in a subjective record in the process of visualizing the experiences. Recording is an important formal factor in the process because it simultaneously reveals the fact itself and the situation choreographed according to intentional choices and the way of distribution. Especially, photographs are chosen as a primary source in the process because it is very effective in the visualizing process and in the perspective of seeing it as a recording device with its acuteness as a proof of recording and its characteristic of being as an index and ancillary means to recall memories. Along with the photographs, using the text provides narrative and fictional characteristics to an image by leading the photographs to stray from its objective characteristic of recording medium. Also, a certain time period and space that I experience in this process is a scope of reality, which leads us to take notice of the present and to expect the effect of awakening the reality.
