조성이후음악(Post-Tonal Music)에서의 '연장' 가능성에 관한 연구

Abstract

연장이란 개념은 쉔커에 의해 처음 제시된 것으로서, 조성음악을 분석하는 데 있어 중요한 개념 중 하나이다. 그러나 조성의 기능이 파괴된 조성이후음악에서도 연장 개념을 적용한 분석이 시도되면서, 이에 대한 타당성의 문제가 제기되었다. 조성의 위계가 사라진 상태에서 구조적인 것과 장식적인 것의 구분이 가능하지 않기 때문이다. 그러나 필자는 본 논문에서 사건위계와 반복에 대한 심리기제에 기반 하여 조성이후음악에서도 곡 안에 위계가 존재할 수 있으며 따라서 연장이 가능할 수 있음을 제시하였다. 그리고 협화·불협화의 개념과 성부진행의 개념을 충족시키기 위해, 기존의 선행 연구인 윌슨의 이탈-돌아옴모델과 스트라우스의 패턴완성이론을 수정 및 통합했다. 이 두 개념은 연장을 이해하는 데 있어 필수적인 조건임에도, 기존의 연장이론에 관한 연구에서는 협화·불협화와 성부진행의 두 개념 모두 설명하는 시도가 미비했다. 따라서 조성이후음악 분석에서 이 두 개념의 제시는 연장이론 적용의 타당성을 더욱 확고히 세우는 것이라 할 수 있겠다. 게다가 위계를 가지는 사건을 정하는 기준으로 러달의 현저함에 대한 조건 뿐 아니라, 어떤 악구의 마지막 지점 또한 현저한 조건이 될 수 있음을 필자는 제시하며 통합모델을 보강하였다. 그리고 이 통합모델의 효용성을 검증하기 위해 베베른의《현악사중주를 위한 5악장》(Fünf Sätze) op.5의 다섯 악장을 분석하였다. 작품 분석을 통하여 베베른이 곡 안에 어떠한 방법으로 긴장과 이완 및 응집성과 통일성을 산출시켰는지 확인할 수 있었다. 뿐만 아니라, 통합모델을 통한 협화·불협화와 성부진행의 개념을 확보하며 조성이후음악에서도 연장이 나타날 수 있는 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다.

Abstract A Study on Prolongation in Post-Tonal Music - Focused on Webern's Fünf Sätze, op.5 -

The concept of prolongation, first suggested by Heinrich Schenker, has been considered a highly effective tool to analyze tonal music. As music theorists started to apply the concept to post-tonal music, however, questions were raised about the validity of the concept in analyzing post-tonal music. It was criticized that in post-tonal music, which has no tonal hierarchy, it was impossible to distinguish the elements contributing to the structure from those which are merely embellishments. Nevertheless, based on event hierarchy and repetition mechanism, this thesis argues that hierarchy can also exist in post-tonal music; hence, prolongation is possible. The concept of consonance/dissonance and voice-leading are also prerequisite conditions for a prolongation to exist. Therefore, applying these two concepts to post-tonal music analysis assures the validity of prolongational theory in post-tonal music. However, very few studies on prolongational theory have tried to deal with both concepts. In this thesis, to ensure that the concept of consonance/dissonance and voice-leading are involved in the analysis of post-tonal music, Wilsons departure-return model and Straus's pattern-completion theory were modified and unified. Moreover, the unified model was enhanced by suggesting that not only Lerdahl's "salience conditions," but also the last point of a particular phrase can be a salience condition for determining the hierarchic events. In order to verify the effectiveness of the unified model, the five movements of Webern's Fünf Sätze, op.5 were analyzed. The way in which Webern produce tension and relaxation, coherence and unity was ascertained through this analysis. Furthermore, the unified model successfully employed the concept of consonance/dissonance and voice-leading, and showed the possibility of prolongation in post-tonal music.
