한국과 미국의 주요 일간지 치과 관련 기사 분석

Abstract

1. 목 적 21세기 정보와 지식의 시대가 도래하면서 과거 일부 전문가들에게만 독점되었던 많은 건강 관련 정보들이 일반 대중에게도 개방되었다. 삶의 질을 추구하고자 하는 인간의 열망은 건강에 대한 관심을 고취시켰고, 그 결과 건강 정보에 대한 수요가 급증했으며, 이런 시대적 요구를 충족시키기 위해 대중 매체들이 건강 관련 주제를 더 자주, 더 폭 넓게, 더 깊이 있게 언급하게 되었다. 여러 대중 매체 중 하나인 신문에는 그 사회가 현재 안고 있는 문제, 그 사회가 가장 관심을 두고 있는 문제, 그 사회가 앞으로 달성해야 하는 문제들이 모두 녹아있다. 따라서 신문 기사를 통해 우리는 그 사회의 현재상을, 또 앞으로 전개되어갈 미래상을 짐작할 수 있게 되어, 사회에 대한 통찰력을 얻을 수 있다. 이는 치과 관련 기사에도 적용되며, 기사 분석을 통해 직접적으로는 전문가가 아닌 일반인의 관점에서 바라본 치과 분야의 최신 화두를 파악할 수 있고, 이를 통하여 치과계의 발전 방향을 사회적 측면에서 가늠해 볼 수 있다. 한국과 미국 양국의 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화, 제도적 기반의 차이는 양국의 치과 환경에 직간접적인 영향을 미쳐, 유사점과 함께 차이점을 만들어 내며, 이는 상당 부분 일간지 기사에 반영될 것으로 보인다. 이렇게 신문에 반영된 치과 관련 기사들의 사회 문화적 중요성에도 불구하고, 기사의 내용과 그 기사가 보도된 사회가 가지고 있는 배경의 연관성을 주목한 연구가 거의 이루어지지 못하고 있다. 이에 본 연구자는 한국과 미국 양국의 주요 일간지에 보도된 치과 관련 기사를 발췌하여 이를 비교 분석함으로써, 현재 치과 관련 화두 및 이에 영향을 미치는 여러 배경과 기반에 대해 국가 간 사회 문화적 차이에 주목하여 비교 사회학적 관점에서 살펴보기로 하였다. 2. 방 법 본 연구는 한국 언론재단에서 제공하는 KINDS와 양국의 신문사에서 운영하는 인터넷 포탈 사이트의 기사 검색 엔진을 활용하여 국가별로 각각 3개의 주요 일간지를 대상으로 2010년 7월 1일부터 2011년 6월 30일까지 1년간 보도된 치과 관련 기사를 발췌하였다. 한국 신문사 중에서는 조선, 동아, 중앙 일보사를, 미국 신문사 중에서는 USA Today, New York Times, LA Times를 대상으로 선정하였다. 기사 내용의 분석에는 인문, 사회 과학 분야에서 최근 활용되고 있는 연구방법인 내용 분석법을 사용하여, 상호배타적인 일련의 카테고리를 구성한 다음, 기사를 각각의 카테고리로 분류하여 그 빈도를 조사하였으며, 각각의 카테고리에서 기사의 주제와 양국의 배경 및 기반과의 연관성을 검토하였다. 3. 결 과 기사 분석 결과, 한국과 미국 양국의 치과 관련 기사는 근본적으로 유사한 주제를 다루고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 구강 건강, 충치, 치주질환, 흡연, 임플란트, 보험 등 많은 주제들이 중복되어 다루어지고 있었다. 그러나 개개 사회 구성원의 필요성, 정부의 정책, 인구학적인 변화 등 많은 요인에 의해 주제들이 기사화되는 빈도는 차이가 났으며, 실질적으로 다루어지는 내용에 있어서도 분명한 차이를 드러나, 국가별 사회 문화적 기반의 차이가 치과에 대한 사회적 인식의 차이에 영향을 미친다고 사료되었다.

1. Objectives The health-related information, which has been utilized exclusively by a few professionals, has become open to the public. The public became more and more concerned about the health and Mass-media, in compliance with their request for the health-related information, came to publish it more frequently and more in detail. Newspaper, one of mass-media, handles a wide range of social concerns. Therefore, we can get the insight for the society, by analyzing its contents. It is also applicable to the dental articles. The correlational study of dental articles and the society in which they are printed has rarely been studied up to now, regardless of its importance. This study is to analyze dental articles, published in Korea and US, and to investigate the correlation of dental issues and national backgrounds. 2. Methods The dental articles, which have been published from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011 in Korea and US, are searched. Chosun, Joongang and Donga were chosen in Korea, and USA Today, New York Times and LA Times, in USA. The "content analysis" method was used in this study. A mutually exclusive list of categories was drawn up first, and then all the dental articles, gathered during the previous step, were sorted to each category. Then the correlation of each category and national backgrounds was reviewed finally. 3. Results The similar range of dental subjects was covered by the newspapers of Korea and US. A great number of dental topics, including oral hygiene, dental caries, periodontal disease, smoking, dental implant, health insurance and health laws, have been mentioned in both countries. However, the frequency in which each topic has been printed, is somewhat different, and also there exist distinct differences in the contents themselves.
