Abstract

Reading is important to successful academic performance, and acquiring adequate literacy skills in the primary grades is essential. For this reason, early prevention and early identification of reading problem is necessary, and timing of referral for special education services is a critical issue. Especially, as a Response to Intervention (RTI) approach has been adopted to identify learning disabilities (LD) as an alternative to IQ-achievement discrepancy model, progress monitoring measures such as Curriculum-based Measurement (CBM) are used to identify students who do not improve their academic skills despite receiving effective interventions. In a specific, as a decision making to identify who is non-responder, a possible individual to have LD, dual-discrepancy model considering both students performance level and growth rate (slope) has been adopted. Although this method focuses on the slope of learning and CBM reading measures have been widely utilized to determine students non-response to intervention, there has been little focus on the research on the slope itself in terms of a valid indicator and the relationships of the slopes and the achievement level (intercept) between the CBM measures.
The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationships of the slopes and the intercepts between two renowned CBM reading measures (word ID measure: Word Reading Fluency, reading aloud measure: Passage Reading Fluency) in the primary grades. The reason why we focused on direct relationship between CBM measures was a practical issue; teachers and practitioners need information to determine an appropriate measure to administer especially for specific grade or learning level. By doing so, we expected to give answers to the questions as follows: (1) what are the characteristics of growth patterns (intercept and slope) for the high, average, and low achieving group? (2) Do the intercept and the slope of word ID predict those of reading aloud? And (3) Do the three sub groups show different relationship patterns between the two measures?
To conduct research questions above, a total of 449 second graders were chosen because second graders show the fastest growth in reading, but a majority of studies on the early identification have focused on kindergarten or first grade. Two CBM reading measures were administered individually for three times (2008 fall, 2009 winter, and 2009 spring), and WRF, PRF measures of EasyCBM progress monitoring system were used. To analyze growth patterns and relationships of the slope and the intercept between two longitudinal data set, univariate and bivariate unconditional Latent Growth Modeling were applied, respectively.
The results were as follows: (1) the characteristic of growth pattern of the low achieving group was both low intercept and low slope compared to the average group. From this finding, it needs to be intensive instruction for the students who are at risk of being LD. (2) The slope of WRF measure was not a significant predictor of the slope of PRF in the average achieving group; in high and average achieving group, one path (WRF intercept to PRF intercept) was commonly significant, on the other hand, in the low achieving group, all the paths were significant. This suggests two things; (1) the slope would be an insufficient indicator in decision making based on the progress monitoring scores. (2) For the low achieving group, the WRF (word ID) measure can be used validly as a good indicator to growth in reading for primary graders.
Although the present study has some limitations in terms of restrictions of grade, measures, and the number of measuring point, it gives implication about the use of CBM reading measures to screen and identify the non-responders in the primary grades. Based on the findings of this study, we can recognize potential LDs growth pattern as their low slope in accordance with low initial status, which representing Matthew Effect. More importantly, although the slope is a core factor in determining LD within RTI approach, when considering the slope was not a valid predictor between two measures, teachers are required to use multiple CBM measures and to make an appropriate decision based on sufficient data supporting students learning.
