Openness of IT Service Platforms

Abstract

Today many IT service platforms, including cloud computing platforms, are built as closed systems; that cannot interact with one another. Customers selection of these closed IT system locks customer in, resulting in the current limited adoption of cloud computing services. However, opening up an IT service platform; reduces users concerns about the lock-in effect, switching costs, and network effects. This paper validates this prediction and improves the overall understanding of IT service systems, focusing in particular on analyzing the effect of the portability and interoperability of cloud computing service platforms on adoption of cloud computing. To achieve our objectives, we develop a value creation model for IT service platform stakeholders, using existing methods on value networks. Based on this value creation model and a specification of requirements of open cloud computing platforms the relationship between the openness of IT service platforms and the adoption of IT service platforms is analyzed. Our results indicates that; portability and interoperability between IT service platforms play a major role in improving IT service platform adoption for emerging IT service platforms. Furthermore, interoperability and portability are mandatory for new providers seeking to survive in this ecosystem. Providers; who currently have market power; will be challenged by the interoperability of smaller IT service platforms and will need to adjust their strategy. In conclusion, the openness of IT service platforms allows for the seamless creation of a system from across a wide range of compatible suppliers. To attract more customers, providers need to convince through innovation and provisioning of service quality in the IT service platform ecosystem.

클라우드 컴퓨팅 플랫폼을 비롯한 많은 IT 서비스 플랫폼이 다른 플랫폼과는 호환이 불가능한 폐쇄된 시스템으로 설계되고 있다. 따라서 이런 시스템을 채택한 사용자들은 향후 시스템 대체비용이 막대하게 소요되기 때문에 클라우드 서비스의 도입을 꺼리게 된다. 플랫폼 개방성은 사용자의 시스템전환비용을 감소시키고 네트워크 효과를 극대화 시키는 장점이 있다. 본 연구는 플랫폼개방성의 효용을 확인하고 IT서비스 플랫폼에 대한 전반적인 이해를 돕기 위한 것이다. 그리고 클라우드 서비스 플랫폼의 이식가능성과 상호운용성에 따른 효과를 분석하는 데 중점을 둔다. 이를 위해 우리는 기존의 가치네트워크 기법을 사용하여 IT서비스 플랫폼의 이해당사자들을 위한 가치창출모형을 고안했다. 그리고 가치창출모형과 개방형 클라우드컴퓨팅 플랫폼의 요구사항을 기반으로 IT서비스 플랫폼의 개방성과 그 서비스의 수용 사이의 관계를 분석하였다. 본 연구에 따르면, IT서비스플랫폼의 이식가능성과 상호운용성은 신규 IT서비스 플랫폼의 채택에 관해 중요한 역할을 담당한다. 또한, 상호운용성과 이식가능성은 신규 인터넷서비스사업자들에게는 생존을 위한 필수사항이 되었다. 현재 시장을 점유하고 있는 기존 사업자들도 중소규모의 IT서비스 플랫폼의 상호운용성으로 인해 도전을 받게 될 것이며 이에 대한 대응 전략이 필요할 것이다. 결론적으로, IT서비스플랫폼의 개방성은 호환 가능한 인터넷서비스 사업자들 간의 무한한 시스템 창조능력을 부여한다. 보다 많은 이용자를 확보하기 위해서는 사업자는 IT서비스플랫폼 생태계의 혁신과 서비스 개선을 지속해 나아가야 할 것이다.
