Abstract
Since the truly two-dimensional material, graphene has revealed itself in 2004, there are great progresses in graphene synthesis technique. Like most materials in
available macroscopic quantities, graphene has many deviations from the ideal flat honeycomb lattice. Aside from external chemical impurities or contaminations,
many factors such as topological defects, inevitable edge structures, polycrystallinity, intrinsic ripples and substrate interactions modify the physical properties of graphene. Especially, the edge structures of graphene have attracted much interest because the electronic structure is very sensitive to the details of the edge. It is also known that well-controlled edges structures can induce magnetism.
The one of interesting features is that the scattering process at the graphene edge. Usually at the edge of the material, there formed a standing wave which reflects the interference between incident and scattered waves. But in graphene, there arises unconventional standing wave which has very short-ranged nodelike pattern. We have studied scattering properties at various graphene edges using low-energy effective Hamiltonian models and first-principles pseudopotential calculations, and compared our theoretical results with experimental data from scanning tunneling microscopy. Regardless of the termination of the hydrogen atom, the armchair edge show almost perfect intervalley scattering. In contrast, the pentagonal reconstruction of the armchair edge can give rise to intravalley scattering (i.e., pseudospin mixing) for incident electronic waves with oblique angles. For these calculations, we employed modified hopping parameters extracted from a first-principles Wannier function approach. We also observed beating and slowly decaying patterns in charge density plots by quantum interference of scattering waves at the edges, which are in excellent agreement with STM experiment. On the other hand, the zigzag edge have only intravalley scattering. Therefore, it does not display any short-range oscillations such as aforementioned beating patterns in the normal direction to the edge.
With abovementioned methods, we can predict the scattering properties of various graphene edges that are not easily observed due to its formation energy and irregularity. According to its crystallographic direction and defect density, the general trends of scattering properties can be deduced.
On the other hands, the edge often makes localized states which cannot propagate into the bulk direction. These states have nothing to do with the bulk scattering properties but can be understood the complex band structure of bulk materials. The degree of localization can be directly derived from the energies and wavevectors of localized states. By first-principles calculations, I investigated two kinds of edge structure that are observed in high resolution transmission electron microscopy image. The localized state at the edge and its energy dispersion is also discussed.
We end up with summary and perspectives to be investigated more.
