청소년의 미디어 이용 격차에 관한 탐색

Abstract

본 연구에서는 초등학교 5학년에서 중학교 2학년까지, 1,400명을 대상으로 한 서베이 자료를 2차 분석하여 청소년들의 미디어 이용에 있어서의 차이를 탐색하 였다. 이들의 인구학적인 특성이나 부모의 사회경제적 특성, 그리고 그들을 둘러 싼 커뮤니케이션 환경에 따라 미디어 이용이 어떤 차이를 보이는지를 알아보았다. 연구 결과, 성별이나 연령에 따라 이용하는 매체나 인터넷 활동에는 차이를 보여 남자 청소년들이 온라인 게임 이용 빈도에 있어서만 높게 나타난 반면 여자 청소 년들은 독서, 음악 듣기, TV 시청을 더 많이 하며 사교적인 목적으로 인터넷을 이 용하는 경향이 두드러짐을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 연령이 높아질수록 인터넷 이용이 급격하게 증가하되 인터넷 상에서의 게임 이용은 줄어드는 것으로 나타났다. 가 장 흥미로운 것은 아버지의 학력이 청소년들의 미디어 이용에 영향을 미치는 주 요 변수인 점이다. 아버지의 학력이 높을수록 청소년의 평일 독서시간이나 신문 열독시간은 늘어나는 반면 TV시청시간과 인터넷 이용시간은 감소하였고, 인터넷 이용에 있어서도 보다 다양한 활동을 하는 동시에 특히 학습적 활동을 많이 하는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 청소년의 환경이 미디어 이용이 특정한 효과를 발생 하는 과정에서 매개요인으로 작용하는지도 알아보았다. 인터넷 이용 시간이 높을 수록 인터넷 중독증상을 보이는 경향 속에서도 이들의 부모와의 커뮤니케이션 개 방성과 학교생활만족도가 높을수록 인터넷 이용 시간이 많더라도 인터넷 중독 정 도는 낮게 나와, 어느 정도 매개적인 효과가 있음을 확인하였다. 이러한 결과는 청소년 미디어 연구에 있어서 청소년의 개인적 속성뿐 아니라 그들을 둘러싼 환 경이나 부모의 영향력이 중요하다는 것을 확인하였다. The purpose of this study was to explore adolescents' media use in relation to their demographic characteristics, parents' socioeconomic characteristics, parent-child communication pattern and their school life satisfaction. Using a secondary data analysis of a survey data, 1,400 samples from upper primary and middle school students nationwide. The differences in gender and age was confirmed. Boys generally played online games more frequently than girls, whereas girls were engaged in more diverse activities such as watching TV, listening to music, and reading books. In addition, girls tended to prefer social activities on the Internet. As age increased, so did Internet using, but it was negatively related to playing games on the Internet. Father's educational level was a key variable predicting adolescents' media use. The higher it was, the more adolescents spent time on reading books and newspapers, and the less on watching TV and using the Internet. Those whose father is higher on the educational level tended to perform a wider range of activities on the Internet. It was found that the openness in parent-child communication and school-life satisfaction mediate the relationship between the time spent on the Internet and Internet addiction. The study showed that adolescents' communicative environment at home and school is important in understanding their media use.
