Abstract
Traffic congestion problems are becoming serious in large cities as the number of ground vehicles increases. To solve this problem, the development of an urban air mobility system is undergoing. The compound helicopter is an aircraft capable of high speed forward flight, hover and vertical take-off and landing. Among the numerous compound helicopter, an aircraft using lift fans has the advantages of low noise and safety due to surrounded by duct. In this study, a conceptual design method for compound helicopter using lift fans was developed. Optimal design was carried out as an object function of minimizing the take-off gross weight for compound helicopter using lift fans. Mission analysis consists of a hover/axis flight, a forward flight, and a transient flight analysis. The hover/axis flight analysis was performed using momentum theory considering the additional thrust generated by ducts. Forward flight analysis is performed with fixed-wing analytical techniques, and Oswald factors are calculated and performed to take into account the three-dimensional effect. The transient flight analysis took into account the momentum drag produced by duct.

Optimal design results were derived for transport missions. Optimal design results in fan-in body features having the smallest take-off gross weight and most efficient fuel consumption. Concepts with lift fans mounted on the wings could not make the duct depth larger than the Fan in Body, resulting in a smaller thrust from the duct, significantly reducing the efficiency of the hover/axial direction flight, increasing the overall weight. The maximum power of Fan in Wing was the largest in the transient flight, while Fan-in-BodyWing was mounted on the fuselage and wing, which greatly increased the weight of the lift fan drive system, resulting in the greatest empty weight. Each optimal design result was 3D modelled using CATIA and compared by concepts.
