Abstract
Recently, game-based learning, which uses games to educate students, has been used as a tool to increase interest and achievement in science. Although much research has been done on the educational effects of game-based learning, little has been done that explores or analyzes the educational elements of game content.
The purpose of this study is to identify the nature of science aspects of educational games in science and to determine how teachers can use games. The nature of scientific knowledge is analyzed using Lees (2013) analysis framework for the science textbooks and science education. The subcategories in this framework are (1) nature of scientific knowledge, (2) nature of scientific inquiry, (3) nature of scientific thinking, and (4) nature of interactions among science, technology, and society (STS). In this thesis, games are analyzed in terms of their mechanisms, their whole processes, and their aesthetic elements. The results and conclusions of this study are as follows.
We can see the results show that all five games are not balanced in all four categories of Nature of Science. Although most games confirm that the nature of scientific knowledge and the nature of scientific inquiry are distinct, not many deal with the nature of scientific thinking or the nature of interactions among science, technology, and society. However, in some games, the nature of scientific inquiry is revealed, but it is revealed in an incorrect way, which suggests that teachers should be careful when using games for education. Moreover, the lack of attention to the nature of scientific thinking and the nature of interactions among science, technology and society suggests that students cannot learn the true nature of science in a balanced way. Considering that the nature of science has a variety of characteristics, learning with emphasis on some but not all categories of the nature of science can create a limited perception of the nature of science. However, I suggest that education using games is worthwhile because it is more effective for students to learn using games in terms of intrinsic motivation and interest than to learn using only textbooks.
This study suggests that the nature of science can be taught using games and has specified to be significant in order to enhance the effectiveness of teaching using games. Furthermore, the use of games in education can be enhanced by further studies on science content and related detailed categories of the nature of science in games.
