In this research, we investigated the level of multicultural acceptance of elementary students and the peer relationships that affect them. School aged children develop the social skills needed to grow as competent members of society through peer relations. The purpose of this study is to propose a practical method to develop multicultural acceptance by examining the relationship between peer relations and multicultural acceptance in elementary school students. For this purpose, I set up 'Does the peer relationship of elementary school students affect multicultural acceptance?'
The following hypotheses are set to solve this problem.

The more positive the peer relations of elementary students are, the higher their multicultural acceptability in terms of diversity.

The more positive the peer relations of elementary students are, the higher their multicultural acceptability in terms of relationship.

The more positive the peer relations of elementary students are, the higher their multicultural acceptability in terms of universality.

In order to verify the above hypothesis, 453 sixth-graders attending elementary schools in Seoul were surveyed. Analysis of survey results showed that Peer relations have a significant effect on multicultural acceptability in all three sub-dimensions (diversity, relationship, universality) (p=.000). The results of this research suggest that positive peer relationships of elementary school students can play an important role in develop multicultural acceptance.
The results of this study provide the following suggestions.
First, peer relationships were found to have a statistically significant effect on the cultivation of multicultural acceptance of elementary school students. In other words, positive formation of peer relations is an effective way to cultivate multicultural acceptance. Therefore, schools and society should develop and provide programs and activities for students to form positive peer relationships. For example, schools need to provide hands-on programs such as sports activities so that they can understand and experience differences between each other, conduct cooperative learning and project learning, and form a sense of community among school members.
Also, providing students with difficulties in daily and school life with programs such as peer counselors developed by Korean youth counselors would improve peer support for those students, which would actually help them improve their adaptability and build positive peer relationships. From the community's perspective, it is possible to consider a volunteer program that links multicultural families with ordinary families. If children recognize each other's differences and form positive peer relationships based on diversity through these programs, an atmosphere of accepting groups with diverse cultural backgrounds as inner groups will have a significant impact on fostering multicultural acceptability.
Second, peer relations have a significant effect on the diversity dimension of multicultural acceptance. The diversity dimension composed of three elements of 'cultural openness', 'national identity' and 'stereotypes and discrimination' is the attitude of recognizing the values of culture, heritage and identity of outgroups equally with stereotypes and prejudice to be. In this research, the positive formation of peer relations in elementary school was proved to have the highest influence on 'openness to culture' and 'stereotypes and discrimination'. In other words, peer relationships can be seen as an effective way of forming positive attitudes without having prejudice or negative stereotypes about various cultures. In addition, positive peer relationships can be inferred to be effective in creating an atmosphere that accepts people with different racial and ethnic backgrounds as members of the community without discriminatory behavior against individuals belonging to other cultures.
Third, peer relations have a significant influence on the relationship dimension of multicultural acceptance. The relationship dimension consists of three elements: 'unilateral assimilation expectation', 'reject avoidance emotion', and interchange behavior' and is a concept that aims to establish a close relationship with outsiders. The positive experience of peer relationships in elementary school was found to be effective in lowering the emotions that children intentionally avoid or form relationships with multicultural groups. In addition, the results of the 'interchange behavior' showed that the positive peer relationship is effective in enhancing the multicultural acceptance by enhancing the active will of the children who want to interact with the multicultural group. On the other hand, the fact that the 'unilateral assimilation expectation' has a lower score than other factors suggests that one-sidedly accommodates oneself in a peer group and should be wary of following mainstream culture without considering diversity in forming peer relationships.
Fourth, peer relations were found to have a significant effect on the universality dimension of multicultural acceptance. The universality dimension consisting of two elements of 'dual evaluation' and 'global citizenship' is related to the attitude of not recognizing the double value according to the local area or ethnic background in recognizing the cultural value of the multicultural group. A positive peer relationship experience in elementary school can provide an environment that recognizes that different origins and cultural backgrounds are not related to peer characteristics.
The results of this study are as follows. First, it is found that, as elementary school students experience positive relationships with their peers, they pay attention to the nature of their peers rather than the background of their peers, and recognize that culture and races are in an equal position and establish a relationship of mutual respect and consideration. Therefore, the positive experiences of peer relations can be understood as the factors influencing the cultivation of multicultural acceptance by pursuing the universal values of human beings such as tolerance and respect, and avoiding discrimination according to the country of origin.
