여성 롤모델이 청소년의 시민적 효능감에 미치는 영향 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 국제 시민교육 연구(ICCS) 2009 데이터와 국제 사회 조사 프로그램(ISSP) 2014 데이터를 사용하여 여성 롤모델이 청소년의 시민적 효능감에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 선행 연구에서 시민적 효능감에 대한 여성 롤모델 효과는 주로 성인 여성을 대상으로 검토되었고, 롤모델의 범위는 여성 정치인으로 한정되었다. 따라서 롤모델의 영향을 상대적으로 크게 받으며, 시민적 효능감이 형성되는 시기에 있는 청소년에 대한 롤모델 효과는 충분히 논의되지 못하였다는 한계가 있다. 본 연구는 여성 롤모델 효과가 시민적 효능감에 미치는 영향이 청소년에까지 확장되지 않을 이유가 없고, 정치 이외에서 다양한 방면으로 유능함을 뽐내는 여성 역시 롤모델로 기능할 가능성이 있다는 점에 주목한다. 또한 모델링 이론에 입각하여 여성 롤모델의 효과는 성별이나 성평등 의식 수준과 같은 개인 수준 요인과 상호작용하며 발휘될 가능성이 있음을 보았다. 이에 본 연구는 여성 정치인 롤모델뿐만 아니라 여성 관리자와 고등교육을 받은 여성과 같이 다양한 측면에서 유능한 여성들이 롤모델로서 청소년의 시민적 효능감을 높일 수 있는지, 롤모델 효과가 있다면 성별이나 성평등 의식 수준과 같은 개인 수준 조건에 따라 달라지는지 살펴봄으로써 기존 연구 논의를 확장하는 데 기여하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 위계적 선형 모형을 활용하여 국가 수준 변수인 여성 롤모델이 개인 수준 변수인 청소년의 시민적 효능감에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 여성 의원 롤모델은 성인의 내적 정치효능감을 유의미하게 높이는 반면, 청소년의 시민적 효능감에 대한 효과는 정치 뉴스를 많이 보는 청소년으로 한정된다. 둘째, 여성 관리자와 고등교육을 받은 여성 롤모델은 성인의 내적 정치효능감을 높이지 못하는 반면, 청소년의 시민적 효능감을 유의미하게 높인다. 셋째, 청소년의 시민적 효능감에 대한 여성 롤모델의 효과는 청소년의 성별과 성평등 의식 수준에 따라 달라진다. 즉 여성 청소년이 남성 청소년보다 여성 롤모델의 영향을 더 크게 받으며, 성평등 의식 수준이 높은 청소년의 경우, 여성 롤모델의 수가 증가함에 따라 시민적 효능감이 함께 증가하지만 성평등 의식 수준이 낮은 경우에는 여성 롤모델 수 변화의 영향을 크게 받지 않거나 부정적으로 반응한다. 이상의 결과는 시민적 효능감에 대한 여성 롤모델의 효과가 청소년기는 모델링을 통한 학습을 활발히 하는 청소년에까지 확장될 수 있음을 시사한다. 또한 시민적 효능감은 보다 다양한 근본적인 효능감에 기반하기 때문에, 인지적 기술이나 의사소통 능력과 같이 시민으로서 갖추어야 할 기본적인 소양을 갖춘 여성 관리자나 고등교육을 받은 여성과 같이 다양한 롤모델의 영향을 받을 수 있음을 함축한다. 따라서 청소년의 시민적 효능감을 효과적으로 높이기 위해서는 정치를 포함하여 다양한 영역에서 인지적 기술, 의사소통 능력, 조직 능력 등과 같이 시민 역량의 밑바탕이 되는 능력에서 유능함을 보이는 여성 롤모델이 풍부하게 제시되어야 한다.

This study examines whether female role models in various fields(i.e., labor market, higher education, and politics) can boost adolescents citizenship self-efficacy. Previous studies have documented that the presence and visibility of female political role models inspire political interest and political activism among young women(e.g., Atkeson, 2003; Burns et al., 2001; Wolbrecht & Campbell, 2007). However, much prior work has ignored the influence of female role models in fields other than politics in encouraging adolescents citizenship self-efficacy. Additionally, little has been known about whether successful females in various fields can also serve as role models to adolescent boys inspiring them to become politically efficacious, and, if any, whether the female role model effect varies in relation to adolescents gender equality attitudes. To fill such important gaps in the literature, this study examines whether adolescent girls and boys in countries with higher female shares of employment in senior and middle management, enrolment in tertiary education, and representation in parliament tend to show higher levels of citizenship self-efficacy. For this cross-national, comparative study, I use data from the selected 33 countries that participated in International Civic and Citizenship Education Study(ICCS) 2009 or International Social Survey Programme: Citizenship Ⅱ(ISSP) 2014. My two-level hierarchical linear modeling(HLM) analyses produced nuanced results. I find that the female political role model effect only applies to adolescents who watch political news on a regular basis. Moreover, while females in business and education serve as role models to both adolescent boys and girls, such effects are more prominent for adolescent girls and adolescents adopting more gender-equitable attitudes. This studys central contributions to the relevant literature are to focus on the influence of female role models in various fields other than politics and the importance of adolescents gender equality attitudes.
