Who Becomes Unhealthy during Economic Upturns?

Abstract

This paper analyzes the age and income group specific relationships between economic cycles and health, using health indices from the Community Health Survey by Korea Centers for Diseases and Prevention. While the health indices of the people who are older than 60 show counter-cyclicity, those of the younger groups show the opposite pattern. On the other hand, the health indices of the people in the low-income group exhibit counter-cyclical pattern, while those of the people in the mid-income or the high-income group show a-cyclical or weakly pro-cyclical pattern. The overall results from the micro-level investigation exploiting specific survey questions pertaining to health behaviors are in line with the age heterogeneous relationships between economic cycles and health. These heterogeneous relationships urge the necessity for tailoring health policies by age and income groups regarding economic fluctuations.

본 논문에서는 한국 질병관리본부의 지역사회건강조사가 제공하는 주관적 건강 인식 정보와 삶의 질 지수를 활용하여, 경기변동과 건강 사이의 관계를 연령별ㆍ소득별 이질성에 주목하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과 고연령층에서는 건강이 경기 역행적인 것으로, 중ㆍ저연령층에서는 건강이 경기 동행적인 것으로 나타났다. 한편 저소득층에서는 고연령층에서와 마찬가지로 건강의 경기 역행성이 존재하는 것으로, 중ㆍ고소득층에서는 건강이 경기와 관련이 없거나 약한 동행성을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 각 연령 집단이 보이는 건강과 경기변동 사이의 이질적인 연관성은 각 집단의 건강 행태와 밀접한 관련을 가지는 것으로 파악된다. 결과적으로 본 논문은 경기변동이 건강에 미치는 영향에 대처하기 위한 정책 수립에 있어 연령과 소득에 따른 이질성을 고려할 필요성을 제시한다.
