강석경 소설에 나타난 개체성 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal that the overall consciousness in Kang Seuk-Kyongs works is based on the pursuit of singularity. Reviewing Kang Seuk-Kyongs personal history under the circumstances at that time, this article examined in detail the existence patterns of the characters in the works, and found that the characters' personalities were revealed through differences and repetition. Also, this thesis confirmed that the works theme, shown through characters, are related to one another, and thus are not singular, but enhanced through the will to power. The concept of singularity which used in this article is contrary to homogeneity or monolism and is based on the premise that all beings are unique. All beings are created by their own past, present, and future experiences that make them distinct. And not only differences in experience but also environmental factors were cause intervals of intensity that lead to the singularity of being. The emergence of a singularity in Kang Seuk-Kyongs works is contrary to the social status that can represent the monism, and the style of pursuing the singularity of the characters in her works deepens the theme consciousness of each work. The second chapter of this study focuses on the works of the early 70s created by Kang Seuk-Kyong. In Chapter 2, Section 1, we see that the author sensitively reflected problems of characters who are non-autonomous, middle-class male and live in an absurd society. Her early works also visualize the singularity of the protagonist that can not be connected with identity through the recollection of personal experience which contrast to the situation. In the view of this non-autonomous individual, this article can judge as a sort of affirmation of life though Camus' absurd theories. This is possible because author has experienced reading about Camus. In Section 2, we examine the motifs in the early works of Kang Seuk-Kyong in relation to theory of the other grounded in Deleuze and Levinas. The extreme of the author's works not only evokes the mood but also the awakening the characters. In addition, the people of the extreme are contrary to the society which means monism, and also express the subject consciousness which the author wants to express. Based on this, in Chapter 2, this article tried to derive the background in which singularity emerged through the early literature of Kang Seuk-Kyong. In Chapter 3, Section 1, the article confirms how by the 80s, Kang Seuk-Kyongs literature introduced and focused female protagonists and emphasized the issue of women in society. Nothing that this was due to the fact that women's issues had arisen in Korean society and issues related to the authors person history, this article judges that the author wanted to show woman who can not be reduced to the universality in pursuit of singularity. Therefore, it is confirmed that married women, the military camp town women, and the wandering young generation of each work are presented, so that the characters that can not be defined under one concept but rather be reflected as a singularity each with uniqueness. In Chapter 3, Section 2, this article explore how the individual aspect reveals the work in order to escape from the totalitarianism that imposes uniform thought by the democratic movement and popular consciousness of Korean society. In order to realize this, the characters showed the movement of their own space. This article considers this as a means to pursue singularity. In Chapter 4, Section 1, this study points out that Kang Seuk-Kyongs works are trying to exhibit the conditions of the space for free expression of singularity, while also showing spaces in which singularity is oppressed and cannot be expressed. The important point is that the society where the author ultimately wants to escape is not a specific society such as Seoul, rather the author wants to live in an ideal space for manifestation of singularity by moving from a corrupted society under the influence of modernization to a natural space like India and Gyeongju. In contrast to the previous research which just focused on India and Gyeongju, this article tried to secure Kang Seuk-Kyongs author consciousness through the opposing composition of Korea – India and Seoul – Gyeongju. In Chapter 4, Section 2, this study confirms that the consciousness of the problem through the whole world of Kang Suk-kyung literature is the pursuit of singularity. At the same time, this article points out that the contact point where singularity meet identities is reflected in the early works; shows that in the middle works Women are beings that are not reduced to universality; and finally reveals that in later works, what is expressed that the pursuit of spaces which freely manifest the singularity. This article shows these point through the eternal regression. It may seem like somewhat of a premature viewpoint for Kang Seuk-Kyongs literature. However, it is meaningful that this article use a new approach which is singularity to Kang Seuk-Kyongs works through the organic view. This attempt gives significance to Kang's works. Finally, I hope that this paper becomes the root and the stem and leaf of Kang Seuk-Kyongs Literature Research and will spread out.

본 연구는 강석경 문학세계의 전반적인 문제의식이 개체성의 추구에 있음을 규명하고자 하였다. 이에 당대의 상황 하에 작가의 개인사 검토와 더불어 작품에서 등장하는 인물들의 존재 양상을 구체적으로 살펴보았으며, 작중 인물들이 지닌 개체성은 차이와 반복을 통해 드러나고 있음을 파악하였다. 또한, 등장인물들을 통해 드러나는 주제에 있어 작품 간 유관임을 밝히며, 이들이 단순히 독특한 존재로서 귀결되는 것이 아니라 힘의 종합인 권력의지를 통하여 각 작품의 주제의식이 강화되고 있음을 확인하였다. 본고에서 사용한 개체성(singularity)의 개념은 동일성이나 일원론 등과는 반하며 모든 존재가 독특하다는 전제를 기반으로 둔다. 개체들은 각자의 과거, 현재, 미래에 의해 존재하게 되는데 이들의 경험들을 통해 차이가 유발되게 된다. 그리고 경험들의 차이 등을 비롯한 환경적 요소들은 존재에 대한 강도의 차이를 빚어내며 이는 존재들의 개체성으로 이어지며, 개인은 독특한 존재로서 자리하게 된다. 강석경의 작품에 있어 개체성을 지닌 존재의 등장은 동일성으로 표할 수 있는 사회의 모습과 반하는 양상을 보이고 있으며, 작중 인물들의 개체성을 추구하는 방식을 통해서 각 작품의 주제의식을 심화시키고 있다. 본 연구의 2장은 강석경이 창작한 70년대 초기작품에 주목하였다. 2장 1절에서는 작가가 등단 초기에 개인사가 투영되어 조직사회를 살아가는 개인의 존재에 관한 문제를 민감하게 반응하고 있음을 확인하였다. 초기작품들은 부조리한 사회에 대한 고발을 비(非)자율적인 중산층 남성 주인공들을 통해 드러내며, 상황과 대비되는 개인 경험의 회상을 통해 동일성과 결부될 수 없는 주인공의 개체성을 가시화하고 있다. 이러한 비(非)자율적 개인을 바라보는 시각에 있어 본고는 작가의 카뮈에 관한 독서경험을 통해 접하게 된 카뮈의 부조리 이론에 따라, 이들의 현실 대응 양상을 일종의 삶의 긍정으로 판단할 수 있었다. 2장 2절에서는 강석경의 초기작에 나타난 광인 모티프를 들뢰즈와 레비나스의 타자이론과 연관 지어 살펴보았다. 이 작품들은 여타 소설에서 광인들의 입지와는 다르게 단순히 분위기를 환기시키는 존재로서 그치지 않고, 타자로서 등장하여 등장인물들을 일깨워주는 역할을 수행하는 데 의미를 더한다. 또한, 광인들은 동일성으로 비춰볼 수 있는 사회에 반하는 존재라는 점에서 작가가 표출하고자 한 주제의식을 가늠케 한다. 이를 기반으로 본고는 2장에서 작가의 초기작품을 통해 개체성이 등장하게 된 배경을 도출하고자 하였다. 3장 1절에서는 강석경의 문학이 80년대에 들어서 주로 여성 주인공을 등장시키며 여성 문제에 주안점을 두고 있음을 확인하였다. 이는 당대 작가의 개인사와 한국사회에서 여성 문제가 대두됨과 결부지어 볼 때, 기존의 여성에 대한 인식을 진일보하며 개체성을 추구하는 보편성으로 환원 불가능한 여성임을 보이고자 함으로 판단하였다. 이에 각 작품의 기혼여성, 기지촌 여성, 방황하는 젊은 세대가 등장인물들로 제시됨으로써 등장인물들을 하나의 개념 아래에 규정지을 수 없는 각자 독특한 개체성을 지닌 존재로 투영되고 있음을 확인하였다. 3장 2절에서는 당대 한국사회의 민주주의운동과 민중의식에 의한 획일적 사고를 강요하는 전체주의적 풍조 속에서 벗어나고자 하는 개인의 양상이 작품 내 드러나고 있음을 살펴보았다. 이를 실현하기 위해 등장인물들은 자신만의 공간을 확보하거나 도시 주변부로 이주하는 행동을 선택하는 것으로 보인다. 이를 본고는 개체성의 추구를 위한 방법으로 파악하였다. 4장 1절에서는 강석경이 개체성을 억압하며 발현할 수 없는 공간을 제시하는 이면에 개체성의 자유로운 발현이 가능한 공간을 모색하고 있다는 점을 밝혔다. 여기서 작가가 궁극적으로 탈출하고자 하는 사회는 서울과 같은 특정적인 사회가 아닌, 근대화의 영향 아래에 변질된 사회로부터 벗어나 인도와 경주를 비롯한 자연 공간으로 이동함으로써 개체성 발현의 이상적 공간을 제시하고자 한 것으로 사료된다. 본고는 인도와 경주에 주목하는 기존연구와 달리 한국-인도, 서울-경주의 대립적 구도를 통해서 강석경의 작가 의식을 확보하고자 하였다. 또한, 4장 2절에서는 전 장을 총망라하여 강석경 문학세계를 관통하는 문제의식이 개체성의 추구임을 확인하는 동시에 초기작품에서 개체성과 사회로부터 강요되는 동일성의 접점이 투영되고 있음을, 중기작품에서는 여성들이 보편성으로 환원될 수 없는 개체들임을, 후기작품에서는 개체성을 억압하는 사회로부터의 이탈과 개체성의 자유로운 발현이 가능한 공간이 다시금 영원회귀를 통해 드러나고 있음을 표명하였다. 본 연구에서 강석경의 문학에 대해 총망라하는 시각을 제기하는 것은 다소 시기상조의 모습일 수도 있다. 그러나 강석경의 문학세계 전반을 유기적인 시각을 통해 개체성이라는 개념으로 새로운 접근방식을 제기하고 강석경의 작품에 의미 부여하는 작업을 시도한 데에 의의가 있다. 마지막으로 이 논문이 뿌리가 되어 강석경 문학 연구의 줄기와 잎사귀들이 뻗어 나가길 바란다.
