소포클레스의 『안티고네』에서 등장인물로서 코러스의 다중적 역할

Abstract

코러스는 비극에서 매우 중요한 부분이므로, 코러스의 올바른 이해는 비극의 올바른 이해를 위해 필수적이다. 19세기에 Schlegel은 코러스를 이상적인 관찰자이자 시인의 대변인으로 보았는데 그에 관점에 따르자면 코러스는 일관된 성격이 없이, 시인의 뜻을 대변하는 존재일 뿐이다. 그에 비해 20세기엔 Müller를 비롯한 당대 학자들이 코러스를 일관된 성격을 지닌 인물로 보는 관점을 도입했다. 하지만 이러한 관점은 코러스의 심리를 지나치게 세밀하게 이해하려고 한다는 점에서 문제를 일으킨다. 연극의 등장인물(figur)은 실존 인물이 아니고, 그의 심리를 실존 인물처럼 분석하는 것은 현실성이 없다. 따라서 코러스의 역할을 제대로 이해하려면 코러스를 단지 시인의 대변인이나 실존 인물로 보기 보다는, 극에서 다중적 역할을 수행하는 등장인물로 봐야 한다. 『안티고네』에 등장하는 코러스의 역할을 분석해 보면 극에 개입, 다른 등장인물에 대한 판단, 노래를 통해 비극적 아이러니의 표현과 극의 주제 확대 등 네가지 역할을 하고 있음을 알 수 있다.

There have been a lot of scholarly discussions about the identity of the chorus in the Greek tragedy. Some scholars, including Schlegel in the 19th century, claimed that the chorus was a mouthpiece of the poet, and did not have a consistent character. The weakness of this view is evident, because according to it, the chorus is just a tool to be used by the poet, and not a dramatic figure, so the tragedy loses its integrity and divides itself into dramatic figures and the chorus. Because of that, Müller and others claimed in the 20th century that they have a consistent character. Their view restored the integrity of the tragedy, but has its own problem in that they focussed on the consistent character too much, so that they didnt pay enough attention to the songs of the chorus, which is the main contribution of the chorus to the tragedy. When we analyze Antigone, we can discover that the chorus plays four different roles: they act, they judge other characters, they express tragic irony, and they expand the meaning of the drama through their songs.
