The objective of this study was to elucidate the experience of Living as a counselor at the school setting that underwent the Sewol Ferry tragedy, the difficulties the counselors encountered and overcame, and the meaning of these difficulties in their lives. This approach was taken as a means to explore the implications of consultation and counselor education. Based on the goals of the study, the research questions were constructed as follows. Firstly, how is it like to living as a counselor at the school that suffered the Sewol Ferry tragedy? Secondly, what meaning does such experience of living have on the counselors lives?
This study was conducted through Narrative Inquiry, the most suitable method for understanding the experiences of the research participants. This study examined a total of four research participants, of which three main participants were each interviewed in six consultations over approximately three months. Data collection involved consultation records, the researchers journal, the participants project proposals and reports, as well as photos and clips. For data analysis, texts obtained on site such as consultation transcripts and records were organized over multiple read-throughs, after which repeated analyses and interpretations based on the three-dimensional narrative inquiry space were conducted to ultimately uncover the meaning of the narrative.
A summary of the studys results is as follows. The results were divided into five main categories: the experiences of the study participants before and after entering the school setting, the experience of counseling at the school that underwent the Sewol Ferry tragedy and the attempts of overcoming the experience, and the resulting realizations and discoveries. Miro Lee, a counselor overwhelmed on site, made comments such as if only he could help, overwhelmed by the site of tragedy, nonfunctional, lost, a connected present, and just being here with them, while Dojeon Shin, a counselor employed by the school, spoke of finding the context of the scene at a school that suffered a disaster, between the demands of the school and personal wishes as a counselor, settling in as an insider, even if it wasnt a consultation, and over another level. Moreover, Seongsil Na, a newly recruited counselor at the scene, told of beginning his career at a school devastated by a catastrophe, questioning the meaning of a counselors existence, playing together, with flexible professionality, and serving as the connecting link.
The findings obtained from the experiences of living as a counselor at the school that underwent the Sewol Ferry incident were interpreted into four main topics: finding ones place as a counselor, discovering new ways of helping the clients, experiencing pain similar to that of the victims, and personal development as a counselor. Finding ones place as a counselor encompassed the chaos experienced by the counselors on a site lacking a control tower for psychological support during disaster, and their struggles to reestablish their role and identity. Through this process, the counselors discovered the importance of the ability to flexibly adapt to unstable environments and underwent a transformation into a more active figure. Discovering new ways of helping the clients referred to the counselors realization that prioritizing the clients needs and perspectives, and above all else, being by their side, is more essential and necessary than strictly adhering to traditional ways of counseling. In particular, the significant support provided by the simple existence of a counselor that stays with the clients during his daily life and suffering was discovered. Third, the counselors that experienced pain similar to that of the victims felt utter powerlessness amidst the demand to not do anything. Fourth, personal development as a counselor pertained to how the counselors experienced exhaustion and stress but also ameliorated their capabilities as a counselor. However, their progress meant one that constituted of negative experiences and suffering, one that continues to the present as part of the process of coping.
The aforementioned results detailing the experience of living as a counselor at the school that suffered the Sewol Ferry disaster showed the importance of counselors approaching their clients by putting down their personal points of view and listening attentively to what the clients truly need in order to help and console them. This indicated that professionality as a counselor at the school setting not only required expertise in consultation theories and methods, but also required a sincere demeanor in viewing the victims of catastrophe as individual human beings and assuming a demeanor aiming to wholeheartedly understand their pain and suffering. Furthermore, the results indicated that the obstacles hindering counselors from performing optimally cannot be overcome at the individual level, conveying a dire need for an efficient response system as well as explicit, coherent guidelines for the counselors roles on site.
This study demonstrates its significance by enhancing the understanding of the potential difficulties encountered by counselors at sites of disaster and further suggesting future directions for consultation and counselor education through the narrative inquiry of the experience of living as a counselor at the school that underwent the Sewol Ferry tragedy. The insights discussed are predicted to serve as a guide for counselors that may enter sites of disaster by informing them of the necessary approaches, knowledge, and demeanor.
