- Abstract
- This paper deals with the debate on the relationship between mysticism and ethics, which is conducted by American scholars. They asked "Why did mystics who are claimed to have extraordinary religious experience cause an ethical scandal?" In fact, the ethical status of mysticism is an old question in religious history The core of the debate has been set on the relationship between the monistic mystical tradition and ethics. Jeffrey J. Kripal argues that there are no necessary connection between mysticism and ethics, which is clearly demonstrated in the case of monistic mysticism of the Orient such as Hinduism. William Bernard counter-argues that mystical experience has ethical implications and make mystics more ethical. The debate shows the interrelationship of mysticism and ethics is not clear. If mysticism surely functions as the basis for an ethical life, the debate itself would not even be started at all. The mystical experience should be interpreted and be integrated into ones life properly. The debate enable us to have a betterview over the puzzling relationship between mysticism and ethics.
