Abstract
The Narmer Palette was discovered by Quibell in 1894 in Kom el-Ahmar (Hierakonpolis). The decoration commemorates the victories of Narmer. It celebrates the birth of Egyptian civilization. It is of such vital importance to our understanding of the first human culture that is truly unique and utterly irreplaceable. The Narmer Palette is so valuable that it has never been permitted to leave the country.
The beautifully carved palette, 63.5cm in height and made of smooth siltstone, is decorated on both faces with detailed low relief. These scenes show a king, identified by name as Narmer. Maat, the principle on which Egyptian culture and civilization was formulated is beautifully expressed in the Narmer Palette.
