노키아의 유산

Abstract

기술 후발주자에 있어 가장 중요한 것은 역량 개발에 필요한 자원의 확보다. 본 논문은 한 산업을 독점하여 자원 부존이 높은 기업이 기술단절로 인해 쇠락하고, 이로 인해 유, 무형의 자원이 후발기업으로 흘러들어갈 때 해당 기업의 기술추격 확률이 높아짐을 조명한다. 구체적으로 노키아와 같은 선도기업의 몰락이 미디어텍과 화웨이 등에 기회의 창으로 작용함을 보인다. 노키아를 사례연구의 대상으로 삼은 이유는 노키아가 자원유출의 특수성 때문이다. ICT 산업에서 노키아처럼 대규모로 해고를 단행한 전례가 없다. 본 사례연구는 노키아에서 나온 고급 인력이 미디어텍, 화웨이, 샤오미, 노르딕 반도체 등으로 흘러가 기술 추격을 가능케 하는 원동력이 되었음을 보인다.

The most important thing for technology latecomers is the acquisition of the resources required to develop competencies. This paper sheds light on the higher possibility of technological catch-up by latecomer firms when the tangible and intangible resources of a leading firm that has fallen due to technological discontinuities are flowing into the latecomers. Specifically, the collapse of leading companies like Nokia is seen as a window of opportunity for Mediatek and Huawei. The reason why Nokia was the target of case studies is because of the idiosyncratic nature of resource outflow. There is no precedent in the ICT industry for large-scale layoffs like Nokia. This case study shows that the high-end workforce from Nokia has become the driving force behind the technological catch-up by flowing into Mediatek, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Nordic Semiconductor.
